GTO Box Set?

I was wondering if anybody knows of a GTO Box Set that is available?

reply

I just ordered mine, for cheap, and it included all the TV shows eps, the Special, and the Movie.

reply

Did you order the one selling from China because there are numerous ones at $35 a pop with free shipping that i am heavily looking at, which beats the price at Best Buy of $69, but I am skeptic on the authenticity of the ones on Ebay.

reply

The set I ordered came from California, however it definitely is a copy. It included the series, movie and special. The quality was not the highest, however, it was still very watchable and for $19.99 including shipping, was quite a deal. If you are a purist, then I'd go with Best Buy.

The cheapest box set I found was $31.99 for entire series. It is a bootleg, but I am not a purist, and I refuse to paty 150.00 retail for the series. Did you order online, or is the company based in California?

GOMEZ: "Acquitted!"

I found mine at www.sphiatt.com In fact, I just got through watching the entire series. It's pretty sweet, crystal clear visual, an audio! It's a 5 dvd set, but lacks special features, but like I said before, I am not a purist. The great thing about these guys is that they have kick ass box sets, and everything is free shipping! I hope that I was of some help!

I would definitely say that box sets are a good thing for some of us at the end of the day. I say this, as in the UK it costs $40 for 3 episodes of anime, which is frankly ridiculous. I was wanting to get host in the Shell Standalone Complex on DVD and it would have cost me $160 for all four DVDs and a wait of over a year until they finally got a UK release. I got a bottleg DVD box set for $30, fine the quality is about 80% that of the DVD and the subtitles are a little perplexing at times but until anime distributors in the UK stop taking the piss then there's litle other option..

reply

are you people retarded? this is for the live action gto not the anime. you can tell by looking at the number of episodes, only 12. just figured id tell you...

reply

Mmm.. only problem is that the graphic used on the IMBD entry is for the anime series is it not??

So we're maybe not retarded after all...

Mind you, it's not even released in the UK as far as I know so I've no idea to begin with!

At first, I bought a bootleg boxset, but I hated how hard it was to get the discs to play on my X-Box. So, I decided to save up and buy the two 5-disc boxsets.

Funny way how I got them was that I started working at Borders Expressway at my local mall. I was putting items away around my first week working, and I noticed that they carried both box sets, only $40 each. Since I worked there, I was able to get an employee discount (33% for books, 20% for music/dvds) and ended up paying only 33 dollars per set. All in all, I only paid $66 for both official sets, which would have been at least $100 each normally, and they work a lot better than the bootlegs.

So, it was well worth it.

Yes, I agree with junk_project44. I was trying to find the live action and with everybody talking about the anime on the wrong bored I got confused and thought that IMDB had mixed the two together.

So does anybody know of a good deal on the live action box set or if there is one?

reply

as far as i know of, there isn't. You can probably find the movie, but you won't be able to find the series or the Drama Special.
The only other possibility would be that there is a HK-bootleg out there somewhere, but i'd recommend staying away from bootlegs all together (crappy subs, crappy image, crappy everything)

I already have the live action movie. I try not to ever get bootlegs unless an orginal is not available. I will be more than happy to buy a foreign release of a film/series. Most of the HK films that fund their way over here to the U.S. are not bootlegs. They are legit, but lack features and english sub's are not what they concentrate on. Hong Kong copyright laws are very strange and Japan does indeed sell distro rights to quite a few places over there. A bootleg dvd tends to be some sort of home recording media and with cheap cases's and covers. The HK dvd's are almost always run off a glass master press and with good quality boxes. I've been burnned a few times on them by not asking up front to see the flick run with subs before I bought it and then get home to see wrong and off track subs, but for the most part I've saved thousands of bucks and it's worth it. I dont mind buying in person, but I'll order online if I dont have a choice.

The keys to getting HK imports are to wait for about a 1 to 2 year period after a U.S. or Euro release of that title. They will make a new transcript of the english subbing and (sometimes) put in some extras. I got the entire GTO anime box set with excellent sub's a few months ago for 30 bucks. Perfect video and audio, and loaded with extras. My friend couldnt wait last year and bought it before the U.S. release. He ended up with a nice box but the sub's got so bad that entire episodes ended up with another episodes sub's, and the translation just went from par to flat out stupid (which can be fun). Again, the other part is to ask to see a disc before you buy it. This works at conventions and mom & pop stores that sell anime this way. Online how ever is another story. You just have to be willing to take the chance. At this point, I'd be willing to for this series.

Has a GTO Drama boxset even been released? I've been looking everywhere!

reply

Look on yesasia.com they have the live drama but it's going to cost you.

You can now find the live action (series and movie), and Anime box sets at most major conventions. The current versions of legit Hong Kong imports are selling for about $30 per box set at most conventions and well worth it. I will admit that the live action box set is in SECAM but no region. Some region 1 players have no problem with SECAM (if they are quality built machines), but if you use an el-cheapo DVD player or game console you may indeed have issues with playing GTO live action. It's really the only option you have for this series in N. America as there seems to be no plans to release it over here. Worst case scenario, you can watch it on you PC as most computer DVD rom drives tend not to have a problem with this.
