Any other series with such great characters?

I just finished watching GTO and although the ending wasn't that great, I was blown away by the series as a whole.

The characters were the glue that held it all together. They were simultaneously highly entertaining and believable, making the viewer emotionally invested in the show. Any recommendations for other anime series that do this? Genre doesn't really matter.
