What was "knee jerk" about the movie? I think you are missing the reality. There are poor people and very rich people living within a bus ride away.

Maybe you should watch "To Live" by the very same director and decide if he is pro Mao.

reply

Who is being so gullible here? _Mao: The Unknown Story_ has many problems. Just check out the serious reviews of the work, which list many of its issues. Before accusing others of being gullible, perhaps one should be more rigorous in their own approach to texts cited as authoritative.

reply

you obviously could not understand the deeper parts of the film and just saw it the suface literal parts.

reply

I don't want to be negative either, but the film is called Not ONE Less. Maybe you didn't understand the film. Watch it again :-)

reply

but she already lost the runner, so it really didnt matter whether she got the boy back or not

reply

SHE was a little bit dumb? What about you? Get a clue.

reply

I am a middle aged teacher in a wealthy nation.

The subtleties of the film translate very well anywhere.

She was only a kid herself .. the other kids didn't know that they were supposed to behave suicidally when unsupervised.

She wanted to be paid. She wanted to do a good job.

I enjoyed the film. I thought it was beautifully sensitive and innocent. Yes, to us Wei Minzhi's actions might seem "dumb" but the character's only supposed to be 13. Although, having said that, I wonder if she realised how well she was teaching math to the children while calculating bus fares to get Zhang Huike back?

I also noticed in the titles that the characters really are their roles in real life. Fantastic idea.

reply

The idea of using real people as actors was borrowed from Italian neo-realism.

Also,
To everyone who gets very indignant when some says she is dumb: she is. The fact that she is not terribly smart is integral to the movie. But that doesn't mean she doesn't deserve credit. A lot of movies deal with being displaced in a way, as Wei is when she comes into the city. As in other movies such as Comrades: Almost a Love Story and Beijing Bicycle, the characters are very ignorant of life in a new place. Even through that they persevere, which makes the story even more powerful in the end. You have to expect them to be "dumb", because they move to a city after living in the country for their entire lives.

reply

Exactly. Surely it's only natural to have characters making not-entirely-rational or poorly-informed decisions. That's what real humans do every day of their lives.

I suppose on a clear day you can see the class struggle from here.

reply

Then let's talk about "saving private Ryan", sacrifice a team just for one person, is that dumb too, huh?

reply

I think you all missed the point. She was a thirteen year old girl without formal education who become a substitute teacher because she needed money.

I like what PaulMorel said.

The character was only a kid, not dumb, but naive. She was just a very determined, stubborn little girl. And we all can be like that sometimes!

reply

I Know! i am studying it in English and my teacher thinks she's inspirational and that she is a saint! I think she's a little dumb, i mean, anyone can calm a bunch of kids! :P
