Evie character changed too much

She was a clutz in the first movie and then in this one she's supposed to be a tough fighter. I hated that they changed her to be the complete opposite of her original character. One of the things that I didn't care for in this movie.

And you are an idiot! Yes you, the person who made the sig look like part of the message!

I like it. Characters change over time, especially after a traumatic experience. I don't know which is hotter actully, the clumsy nerdy girl or the badass goth.

People do change, yes, but she's completely the opposite of herself in the first movie. Yes, I expected confidence and toughness, but let's not forget that she's supposed to be the reincarnation of some Egyptian princess in the second movie. Why didn't she remember anything in the first one? More important, why doesn't Imhotep remember anything in the first movie? He even tries to make her the vessel of his lover, for God's sake. It's all weird.

I do admit that the whole re-incarnation thing was kind of cheesy. They do that with a lot of movies, Dracula is another example. It's right up there with "The Chosen One" as a tired story trope.

But the kid said he was 8 years old, so the second movie takes place close to a decade after the first, plenty of treasure hunting years for her to become a bad ass.

There's a fan edit out there that completely removes all references to the whole reincarnation thing. A far better treatment of Evy.

I believe they mention in the beginning of the film. She is married to Rick so maybe he rubbed off of her in some way

also, watching 5 colleagues get killed, 4 of which by having the life sucked out of them, and nearly being sacrificed, and continuing to poke around in ancient tombs despite this may have something to do with it as well.

In the movie when they are attacked in their home Evie is fighting off some of the bad guys. Alex looks shocked at how well she is doing and asks where she learned how to do it. She replies that she has no idea, but then firmly kicks a guy in the nuts and takes him out. She then says she learned that from Rick. pretty clear that Rick was showing Evie and helping her learn how to defend herself. It had been like two years since the first film I think, so it makes sense. Plus, who knows how many adventures they had been on between movies.

Rick magically having a tattoo that he'd apparently always had was more annoying than anything to do with Evie.

That does sound a lot better! Any idea where I can find this fan edit?

I don't know if it's still online anywhere, but you can find more info on it here:

Ive recently re watched both the films. I used to love Returns as a kid but the older ive got the more ridiculous it has become. The First was and still is a great action/adventure film with great characters. The sequel is just to OTT for me, the reincarnation story while providing nice scenes was stupid, maybe if they'd introduced another female who could have had them instead of Evie it would have fitted. I would also agree that i prefer Evie from the first film to the second, granted though that years have passed and from what we gather they've been going on adventure after adventure so she's bound to have gained confidence and changed. It would have been better perhaps if the sequel had taken place 1-2 years after the first and you could get rid of the kid (like the Zorro sequel to).

Also, Rick was already trying to teach her how to fight in the first movie during the scene where she gets drunk.

Since they were married and a 9 year old, it's safe to say that the movie took place about 10 years after the first, not 2, haha. So it's entirely possible that Evey would have changed in due course.

reply

It's been longer than 2 years. The movie was made 2 years later but they have a 10 year old son. It takes place years after the first.

reply

The boy said he was 8 in the film so married 9-10yrs fit.

reply

There was quite a bit of time between the events of the first movie and the second. They got married and had a son and were presumably traveling around and exploring quite a bit. Hanging out with Rick for that long would definitely improve her fighting skills.

Evelyn was a LOT better in the first movie.

I really don't see the issue. You want her to be a goofy clutz yet she's living in a world that assassins (both alive and dead mummies) come after them. Obviously she Needed to know how to defend herself in order to survive, and in order to be able to do her part in protecting her and Ricks son.

I'm also fine with the past life story. Again, a world where Mummies, scorpion kings, flesh eating beetles, etc. Yeah, a reincarnated princess fits right in with that. I think the actress played the part well.

reply

You're right, people don't change THAT much in THAT way. But even if they did, that doesn't mean it's entertaining for the audience who wants to see the same characters they enjoyed in the first movie.
