the location

I was wondering where this story took place. Which city did they live in and which beach is it at the end of the film where they say goodbye to their son's girlfriend? Does anyone know?

reply

The story took place in Ancona, on the east coast of Italy (Marche). The beach at the end is Nizza (France).

Sorry to be pedantic, but the beach isn't in Nice, though very near, to be sure. It looks more like Menton to me.

The location of the end is Cannes, one of the most spectacular beaches of the Riviera.

It's absolutely Menton beach!!!!!!!!!! and I know for sure.

Yes, it's Menton. On the 2-DVD set of La Stanza del Figlio, there is the press conference of the movie during Cannes 2001. Nanni Moretti says that during the private projections, Gilles Jacob, the president of le Festival de Cannes, turned to Nanni Moretti afeter the end of the movie and said to Nanni : Menton!! i was there last week!!! During this conference, Gilles Jacob explains that it was a way for him to get away from the drama of the movie and talk about something far different.
Moreover, you can evidently see in the final scene when they park the car that there is the french flag so it means that they have come to the french border, and Menton is actually the first city when you go from Italy to France. Nice is 10 or 15 km away from Menton.
So, it's in Menton.

This movie is a masterpiece, anyway. Nanni Moretti is a pure Genius. Bye from France, Didier.
