In the film the character Laine Hanson says about the separation of church and state that it is not there to protect religion from the grasp of government but to protect our government from the grasp of religious fanaticism.

Actually the separation of church and state goes both ways. It is there to protect religion from the grasp of government and protect government from the grasp of religion.

See in a left-wingers mind it only goes one way for them. They think the state can intrude on religion but religion can't intrude on the state. Just look at these left-wingers today who want the government to force churches to perform gay marriages. If your a centrist like I am you'd realize this is tyrannical the government shouldn't be allowed to make a church perform a marriage that goes against there religious views.

Yes, but no one ever takes such movement claims seriously. You cannot and should not force it. The extreme conservatives have many ridiculous such fanatic ideas that are also laughed at and ignored. It's a balancing act. One of the great things about our country is the fact that the parties really do take 'turn' in government at the top.

It does go both ways. Separation of church and state protects religion. And who cares what a fictitious movie character says, if you want to get politically nasty. If you want to preserve religious freedom you should be more concerned about the real religious right who want to break down those walls of separation.

I'm a left winger and I absolutely believe the separation of church and state should go both ways. So long as a Church does not break the law, it's not the state's business whatever the Church's doctrines are. The state cannot dictate people's religious beliefs ("no, you can't believe homosexuality is a sin -- in fact, you have to give it your blessing"), because for a Church to accept that would be tantamount to admitting that their beliefs are completely arbitrary. "Yeah, we don't really believe what's in this here book, we know it's a load of toss: we simply use them as our club rules, and it allows us to play cult." If we've gone that far, one might as well ban religion altogether.

So my view, then, as a leftist, is that so long as no laws are violated, the state should butt out.

A church was forced to perform a same-sex marriage? When did this happen?

Agreed. I have yet to see any story, credible or otherwise about pressure on churches to perform gay ceremonies. The closest thing was a CAKE STORE receiving flak for not serving those based on gender preference for a wedding cake, but that is a business and is civil rights issue. This is a right-wing news bubble echo story, I feel. Although i bet it's happened at some small township level somewhere, but it's echoed into a full-scale assault on "traditional marriage" via the Right's echo chamber.

There are plenty of left-wing ideas to assault in this movie, and this is the LEAST of them. But that's the way elections go these days too.....

Generalizing, reductive, didactic and intellectually narrow.

Those who identify as "leftists" number in the millions. The idea that they are some monolithic singly motivated mind all believing the same exact thing, much less one that this poster could possibly understand, is such a limited concept it reveals the poster to be a total partisan ideologue idiot.
