I saw this film when I was a kid (long time ago). Does it start off as 'live action'? I seem to remember 2 guys wearing radiation suits exploring a post apocalyptic landscape, then it cutting to the anime. I thought maybe I was mixing up 2 films but I seriously remember the girl with the egg become 'real' right at the end.

There was an American film called something like "In the Aftermath", or somesuch, and it was live-action, but used scenes from the Angel's Egg animation for a dream sequence. The original Japanese film is completely animated.
