D'Onofrio is hardly a newcomer

Happy Accident

I would mostly agree with what is said about this film in the latest post comments. However, Vincent D'Onofrio is hardly a newcomer. He has made approximately 50 films beginning in 1983. He may be best remembered for being noticed in his role as Pvt Pyle in Full Metal Jacket in 1987. I have to admit I really became enamoured of his work when I became a fan of his character, Detective Goren in Law and Order, Criminal Intent. Now I notice him a lot. Last week I saw him in Chelsea Walls. D'Onofrio is now on my list of actors that I will I will see the film because they are in it. It is always an interesting unconventional story. To borrow a line from Kissing Jessica Stein, D'Onofrio is “Sexy-Ugly” * Grin *
To be honest, I found this terrific little film in the sale of previewed films. It is my favorite place to hunt for obscure and/or little known films. Usually I choose based on who is in it. I do pretty well with this little game I play with myself. I sometimes pick up ‘big’ movies too, refusing to pay 3X as much for a film, I will wait. I can be patient for something I really want to see. At those prices it is the same or cheaper than renting. I don’t always win; I have bet on Woody Allen more than once and lost. * lol * But this one is definitely a winner! I will be talking a lot about this film.
D'Onofrio, as ‘Sam’ turns in a performance that is tender and believable. To borrow a line from Kissing Jessica Stein, D'Onofrio is “Sexy-Ugly” * Grin * He really makes you want his whole fantastical tale to be the truth. Yet even if it isn’t that would be okay too. It is a gentle crazy. * lol * I couldn’t help but notice his hands in this film. For such a beefy man he has such beautiful, graceful hands, almost delicate.
Tomei does an artful dance on a thin wire between cynic and dreamer as ‘Ruby’. Her tousled waif-like appearance lends warmth and sympathy. She takes us right along with her on this unbelievable journey. She gives us the view through eyes of love with which she looks at ‘Sam’. She is funny and precious. I worked with Marisa briefly back in the 80’s when she was working on As the World Turns. I am here to tell you that she truly is very sweet. She brings that sweetness right through the screen to her audience when she works.
Actually all the performances were superb. Each one is a strong thread that supports the finely woven fabric of this tale. I feel compelled to mention Nadia Dajani as Ruby’s friend ‘Gretchen’. She also has that older single girl cynicism that we are seeing a lot of in contemporary film. Yet she does this without seeming Bitchy or cold. She allows us to glimpse that this attitude is a protective shell around her soft emotional self. Her character is the typical “friend” role formula we see a lot. But she brings it right to life and does it justice.
Worth mentioning as well is Holland Taylor as the therapist. Speaking of a bitch. She is a classic. I have loved watching her play a variety of these types of women since she was Tom Hanks’ snotty, rich boss in Bosom Buddies.
And I cannot, not mention Anthony Michael Hall, as himself. He is very funny. I have to admire an actor that does not take himself too seriously.
I found the script well written. At first you think that this will be a quirky little romantic comedy. Quirky does not begin to describe. Definitely put it on pause if you have to go to the bathroom. * lol * The way the story winds around itself, even missing a few minuets can leave you lost later as you try to figure out what is really going on. The collage-like imagry for Sam’s flash backs of the Future/past was a very interesting choice. It worked for me. I don’t mean a montage, I mean literally a collage.
Over all? Nicely done. If you have not seen this film, look for it. If you have seen it tell your friends. It is much more than a sweet little movie. It raises very interesting questions and the overall message that comes through in the end is one we all should remember.

I never saw Kissing Jessica Stein, but the phrase “Sexy-Ugly” does sort of describe D'Onofrio in this and a few other movies. In others I would call him without hesitation “cute” or “handsome”. It fascinates me the way he looks completely different every time. He really earns his reputation as a human chameleon. I had never heard of Vincent D’Onofrio until I started watching LOCI during the second season. (He’s reminds me of a great big teddy bear in it.) When I started looking up his movies I had to look twice sometimes to make sure I had the right guy!

Oh yeah - Happy Accident. I normally don’t do chic flicks or romantic comedies but this movie had just enough twist - and D’Onofrio to do the twisting - to make me love it.

Vincent D'Onofrio first caught my eye in 'Mystic Pizza" then again in "Mr. Wonderful" and I am a big fan of the Law & Order shows so seeing him on that is great and I do enjoy it. I saw him on "Men In Black" and that was funny then on "The Cell" which kinda freaked me out but it was a great performance once again. So as I'm seeing all these different characters he's played I decide to do a search and see what other movies he has out there so I come across "Happy Accidents" and once again I'm very pleased. I thought it was a great movie and I loved the ending. I think the only thing that disappointed me was I kept waiting for her to tell him "I love you" and instead she tells him "I believe you". I was like NOOOOO tell him you love him!!! cause I sure would. haha
I have more movies of his to watch and enjoy and I'm sure I'm going to love them too. It's that sweetness about him and those boyish good looks and yes those hands I simply adore. I say SEXY-LOVABLE not sexy-ugly. Benicio Del Toro is more sexy-ugly i think.

Have a great day !

I do see you're 'sexy-ugly' point, but to me he's more sexy-cute-strange.

I'm sure the other D'onofrio Gals would agree

I agree, he's a sexy-cute-strange kind of man. I first realized who he was in LOCI ( like most people) and it wasn't until then that I realized how many movies I had already seen him in. He's on odd mixture of a man from what I've seen, heard, ect of him, he's strong and virle while at the same time he seems vulnerable, he's rugged looking but easy on the eyes. He's intellegent in a quiet way but he's not afraid to show that he can't do or know everything. Personality wise he seems to be every woman's dream; but at the same time there's a mystery there for those of us who don't know him personally, there's always questions; "what's he like behind closed doors?" questions that add a shadow that's only slightly discernable. He's a family man but also a workaholic, he's normal with odd quirks (like his hands fluttering/moving around him as he moves or speaks, the head nod as he listens or studies something intently.)

"Oooh, what a little moonlight can do."

wow, i think that's pretty much summing him up right there!

i think he does look both vulnerable and rugged too - i think the vulnerable bit is his eyes. Everything you said is probably the best anyone has come to describing the magic of d'onofrio yet - give blue rose a small cigar, people!

I think you're right about it being in his eyes. Have you ever noticed that they look very dark until the light hits them right then that chocolate brown turns into the softest golden color? I think that what I like best about him...his eyes...lol.

I know, his eyes are amazing. Best feature. *grins*

Vincent is an awesome actor. I'm not sure if it wasn't mentioned or not but one fo his greatest performances was when he was a guest actor on Homicide Life on the Street. It was just amazing.

Totally! I saw that and he was soooo good, he's an amazing actor.

For all you ladies who love Vincent D. you have got to see The Whole Wide World! It's Vincent filling up the whole screen with his big hulky hunky self. And it's a love story - the story of pulp writer Robert E. Howard and perhaps the only woman he ever loved (besides his mother - ugh) Novalyne Price. Made in 1996. It's another independent film and hard to find. I saw it on the Sundance Channel so keep an eye out for it there and on the International Film Channel.

There's also "Salt On Our Skin" from 1992, directed by Andrew Birkin, brother of Jane. And starring Greta Schacci, Vincent's wife on the time of shooting. His character in the movie is discrete, but intense and very sexy. A good movie with a beautiful story.
