the characters wearing gloves

Did anyone besides me notice in this movie that one of Max's friends wondered why their all always wearing gloves? that makes me wonder why they wear them to. what's up with that?

reply

Yep that's interesting too. I also noticed that. Bobby was saying like, "Do you wonder why we're always, like, wearing gloves?" From all the characters, Goofy is the first one that Walt Disney made. After making Mickey, he made friends for Mickey like Goofy, Donald, etc. I think that's bcoz of that. In the first place he made Goofy with gloves (dunno why, maybe to show his uniqueness bcoz Goofy = dog & wolf). Max, his son, also follows his father by wearing gloves. Since the movie is made in a "goof world", making everyone goofs like Goofy, everyone should wear gloves too. That makes the characters look special. But it's only for Max and his friends plus Goofy. Brad, Tank, and the others didn't wear gloves.

Disney said that he put gloves on them so that you could tell their hands apart from their skin. =]

My theory is that, back the the days of black and white, Walt needed something so one could see the fingers on a black character. Steamboat Willie, for eksample, begins with a scene of Mickey holding the boatstearing thing, and his gloveless hands are just two rather nasty looking blobs.

I think Lord-Z's right. Notice how Donald Duck has white hands/wings, so he doesn't need gloves.

Though I agree with Lord-Z, it kinda takes the fun out of it. I love that line. When I first saw the movie I was baby sitting, and the line made me laugh. The kids didn't get it.

reply

I could barely breathe I was laughing so hard at that line. I wonder if Paulie Shore even knew how great that line was when he recorded it...

Sheer brilliance. I'd known about the whole gloves thing for a long time, but I never expected Disney to make such an amazing self-deprecating joke.

reply

I am surprised I didn't laugh myself into a coma the first time I heard that line! I thought it was soo funny!

R.I.P Steve Irwin, I didn't know you but I felt like you were my best friend...I'll miss you.

Lol that is my favourite bit of the whole movie!!!!!

they did it so subtly too, like really quickly and passively at the beginning of the scene, it was so the best line in the movie.

My hazy and unreliable memory tells me there's a Disney cartoon where it shown that they get those gloves after being born in a hospital.
