nationalities of the characters

just wondering what accent you imagined the characters would speak with

American: Squall, Rinoa, Selphie, Quistis, Irvine (Texan), Laguna, Kiros
English: Zell (Cockney), Seifer, Edea, Cid
German: Xu, Ultimecia
Latino: Raijin
Australian: Ward
Canadian: Fujin

I knew you two would get me in trouble one day

reply

I dunno. But I DEFINITELY always imagined Irvine with a southern accent! And a husky voice, a la Gabriel Knight lol.

Ultimecia sounds like she's Transylvanian or something.

reply

I reckon,

Squall - American
Rinoa - Japanese
Selphie - Norwegian (Ty the toast for that one)
Quistis - French
Seifer - German
Zell - English (Northern accent)
Irvine - American
Cid - Scottish
Edea - English (London accent)
Kiros - English
Laguna - American
Ward - American
Raijin - (I don't know but sort of Wakka's accent)
Fuijin - German

...well, that's what I thought.

reply

absolutely agree on everything, though i really like the idea of ward being australian

They all look asian in my opinion, just look at the eyes closely. yea some of them have american features, especially the blond hair, but alot of asians have blond hair.

reply

Thats so narrow minded. American features?

European features can be very diverse. We are becoming more and more of a world society. I imagine most if not all of the characters with very diverse familay heritage.

None of them looked Asian to me, I thought all the characters looked very European like.

But on the topic, I could picture Raijin with a Maori (Native New Zealander) accent.
For some reason, I picture Zell with a typical AMerican surfers accent, but without all the "Dude! Cowabunga! Awesome! Surfs Up!" etc etc.

Umm I also thought of Seifer sounding familiar to Ocelot in MGS3. Hopefully the majority of you have played MGS3, but if you haven't, hmm how to explain it: American for starters, with a very cocky style of confidence voice.

except for the blue and green eyes

reply

Well glad at least one knows what im talking about :D
Didn't exactly mean to say they looked alike (Although on that topic, I say they do abit, besides the eyes part)
But I just found the personality similiar, cocky, confident, although skilled, also getting agro easily, so thats why I pictured them with same voice

I agree with a lot. I bet if this had voice actors, Col. Ocelot's voice actor would've done Seifer. Of the ones that I think would be American, I will attempt to classify them by possible state, although I'm very late to the party.

Irvine does seem like a Southern gentleman. Maybe Tennesse, Georgia or Texas, which isn't always considered "The South", but Texans have strong southern accents, so it's the south to me. But there's a huge difference in all of them.

Quistis seems like she could be from NYC, Philly or Boston.

Selphie seems like she would be from the West Coast, maybe the NorthWest, like Washington, or even Alaska, since Trabia has a pretty harsh, cold climate.

Squall could be from anywhere, but if I had to pinpoint how I think he would sound, maybe somewhere void of distinct accents. Like the Midwest. Midwesterners don't think they have an accent, but they can some odd around others with southern accents or any kind of accents unlike their own.

Seifer does seem German, but if he's American, I'd guess, the West Coast.

Zell seems like an Aussie or something non-American. But he could be a typical suburb kid.

Rinoa could be maybe from somewhere near Connecticut or possibly been in an elite private school on the east coast, or an army brat that moved from place to place and possibly country to country.

The Master fisherman seems like he might've grew up near the bayous and swamps of the south.

Everyone else is most likely a foreigner, possibly a few of the ones I said might be Americans. And yall hit the nails on the head with all of them. Cid,
and Raijin especially.

If you don't think they don't look Asian in the eyes, look at the cover for the game on this site. I wouldn't say they're Japanese or something, but you can tell who they were marketing the game to. All three main characters on the cover have small eyes. Plenty of Caucasians have small eyes and have no Asian blood, but I doubt that's the case here. Seifer and Squall look mad a lot, so maybe it's to make look meaner, but RInoa and Selphie look like they could be Asian.

Lastly, before I look thru other old posts, is there a thread about which countries are based on which countries. Galbadia easily resembles Nazi Germany. They even invaded a country that the game developers game a somewhat French classical tune as their theme. Dollet.

Embrace Debate.
