so how much is an 86 karat diamond worth anyway?

hm ?

from ChaCha: "An 84.37-carat white diamond touted by Sotheby's for its unprecedented size and beauty sold at auction just under $16.2 million."

So, there you go.

reply

great, so why don't we make like 1,000 of them so we can bail Detroit out of bankruptcy ?

reply

"Worth" is a capricious measure that is always based on rarity, desirability, and most importantly, what someone else will pay. 1000 84 carat diamonds would probably be "worth" a lot less individually simply because there are so many of them. Also, while some industrial diamonds are manufactured, almost all jewelry grade diamonds are mined. Detroit is on its own...

reply

well then let's make one 860 karat diamond then, which would probably be wroth the $16 Bln Detroit needs.

From Wikipedia regarding synthetic diamonds: "For economic reasons, the growth of most synthetic diamonds is terminated when they reach a mass of 1 carat (200 mg) to 1.5 carats (300 mg)." A point of diminishing returns is reached where the cost of manufacturing a stone would be more than the value of the stone itself. To grow a diamond of 1 carat, the industrial conditions (high temperatures and high pressure in a tightly controlled environment) for growth must be tightly maintained for 6 to 8 weeks without interruption. So I guess, in theory anyway, assuming the process is linear, and not logarithmic, if you had a big enough chamber that you could reliably control the temps and pressures, it would take you over 13 years to grow an 86 carat diamond. That's 13 years with no power outages, equipment failure, source material supply issues, operator error, bankruptcy, etc. As someone who works in an industry where similar technologies are used to build semiconductors, power supply issues, equipment reliability issues, and personnel issues have us repairing and maintaining in cycles much, much, much shorter than every 13 years! Extrapolate that out and it would take you 130 years to grow an 860 carat diamond...

So even if we COULD do it, we wouldn't be able to do it in time to save Detroit. Sorry.

Detroit's fu@ked.

What, Proper fu@ked?

Not even RoboCop could save Detroit.

First things first, man made diamonds are far less valuable than natural diamonds. Second, flooding the market with 1,000 86 karat stones would ruin the value of the diamonds in question.

Besides which, the value of diamonds is completely arbitrary anyway. Just because one 84 karat diamond went for 16 million does not mean that this is some kind of established market value for stones of that size.

so what ?

I'd say it's worth a shot !

Let's try and get 1,000 diamonds so we can Bail Detroit.

Actually, if we make 3,009 we can bail Greece !

reply

It isn't worth a shot since it would take too much time and money to make. Man made diamonds aren't exactly easy or cheap to make.

You wouldn't help Detroit or Greece at all. Since as I said, if you flood the market with diamonds they lose their value. They become as worthless as glass. Especially if they're artificially created diamonds, which already carry a much lower value than natural diamonds.

I don't think you quite understand how life works, you tool. That's the equivalent of saying, "why don't we just print out a billion trillion more dollars to settle the U.S. debt".

Wow. That didn't occur to me. That actually is a great idea, right? I mean we just print out the $15 trillion we owe, and just hand it over to the people which we owe it.

I'm quite sure there's a reasonable explanation, that this idea hasn't been done. Can you please tell me about it?

Thanks in advance.

Shut the f ck up you giant idiot.

dude hear me out for just a sec

if we make 100 of these diamonds, worth $ 16 million each, we have $1.6 billion right?

I'm QUITE SURE that we can get 100 rich people to buy each one of those diamonds at a retail price of $16 million.

ok so now we have ourselves $1.6 billion

I would go as far and daring to say that we can manufacture 1,000 of these diamonds and sell them at a retail price of $16 million each one.

I'm DEAD SERIOUS we can find 1,000 of these rich people (celebrities, businessmen, sportsman, Trump family), who would definitely buy the diamonds.

ok so NOW we have $16 billion!

ok now we can pay the US debt!

why can't we do that ? is it too far fetched?

man if I could get someone to make the diamonds I would do it...

It doesn't matter what it's worth you know that twat les gold would offer you half of what you wanted then he would look on eBay say he can buy the same one on there for 15 bucks and offer you 5 bucks for it and then say I'm doing you a right favour take it or leave it !!!!!
