Top 250....really

It is a good movie. But it does not deserve to be in the Top 250. I would say it deserves a 7,4 or something.
It has a funny style, pretty good plot and good actors. But in no way does it leaves such an impact it deserves to be upp there.

reply

Totally disagree. Top 100, that's a stretch, but top 250, absolutely. Movie is fantastic.

reply

Agreed. It's poor man's Tarantino.

yikes-you think HER is number one???
totally invalidates your opinion on pretty much any movie ever made, btw, Snatch is 20 x better than HER...

reply

Her was good.

reply

What does that even mean? Tarantino is the only guy who can make a witty crime movie?

In fact the overabundant classically British style of flat absurd humour is something far and away from a Tarantino flick. Its very much just a Guy Ritchie flick.

I always find the Tarantino fan boys amusing though because they think he invented something that is merely him, normally elegantly, appropriating a million derivative sources.

reply

Do I really qualify as a Tarantino fanboy, I wonder? I will let the reader be the judge:

I have as of this writing a total of 1238 movies ranked on my Flickchart list. Among those are eight Tarantino films, which are ranked as follows (I'm counting "Kill Bill" as one movie):

42, 76, 218, 230, 279, 863, and 1116.

So obviously I like most (but not all) of his films, and could be said to even love a few of them. But none are in my top 40 (and it is my top 41 by the way that get a 10 rating on IMDb), so a blind fanboy I do not believe is a fair assessment of my feelings about his filmography.

reply

Then why must you use fan boy language in your judgment of a distinct artist's filmography?

reply

I really didn't think I was. Actually, I think it was more of an insult to Guy Ritchie than you interpreted it originally, since my overall assessment of Tarantino is not as high as you assumed. Sorry.

In any event your inarticulate comment, inviting with its lack of analysis the most obvious of inferences, forced you actually account for your taste. No short cuts in the end.

Very erudite of you. 😎

OTOH I do like Lock, Stock, and Two Smoking Barrels better than two of Quentin's more recent films...so there is that.

LS&2SB and Snatch both made it quite apparent that Guy Ritchie was working very hard at being the Quentin Tarantino of the UK.

reply

Unless the movie got mighty different after the first 20 mins, it sure wasn't witty to me.

reply

Tarantino has only made 3 good films, the rest are trash.

reply

Which three?

I liked Reservoir Dogs, Pulp Fiction, and Jackie Brown. I hate all his others. I think a lot of them were almost good but got ruined by something. Dusk Till Dawn was really exciting for 30 minutes, then it turned into a dumb teen vampire flick. Inglorious Basterds had an incredibly exciting and menacing first 30 minutes, then it turned into a nazi fantasy snuff film. Django was pretty good for about half of it, then it turns into a big dumb shootout. Etc... etc...

reply

I agree with you on the ones you listed. But there are two of his movies (or three, depending) you didn't mention that I also like: Kill Bill, and Death Proof. (There's also one you didn't mention that I don't like: The Hateful Eight.)

Well *beep* off and watch your own top 250 and leave the rest of us to ours!

I've had a lot of sobering thoughts in my time Del Boy, it's them that started me drinking!

reply

It's fresh & original...with excellent direction & top notch music (Angel by Massive Attack is sufficient to cross it's barriers of top 150 Imdb )

Now it's just me, Hey it's your opinion and your welcome to say whatever you feel same like me.

I admire this kind of cinema along with Hot Fuzz

The fact this is in the top 100, and classics like "The Long Good Friday" and "Get Carter" are not, is truly a disgrace.

~ I'm a 21st century man and I don't wanna be here.

reply

Not only it is top250, it is in top 100 now. One of the rare movies actually climbing up in this ranking.

reply

I'd not only put it top 250, I'd put it top 100. Its plotting is brilliant, and the dialogue is as good as it gets.

reply

Just going over the top 250 now, I was surprised to see this there.

After "Pulp Fiction", this just pales by comparison. I agree with what Ebert said: "The movie is not boring, but it doesn't build and it doesn't arrive anywhere."

I had this at a 6 after it came out, but downgraded to a 5 after I saw it again and totally regretted it.

This movie is good enough for totally undemanding younger men, the main drivers of the imdb list. At 73% on RT, this movie is lucky to be in top 250, let alone 100. It's just not deserving and has been one of the more overrated titles I can think of from the last 10-15 years, along with "Gladiator". Everyone knows "Braveheart" and even "Rob Roy" kick Gladiator's butt.

reply

Agreed. There are plenty of great films rated below this. This movie is a 7.5 at best. It's entertaining but a pretty shallow experience.
