It would so great, i would buy it on DvD, 6 tapes is a bit much, its almost 10yrs old, COME ON

I just saw it on DVD. Terrific documentary. Being a history buff, already knew several things about the genesis, rise and fall of Nazi-fascism. However several revelations are truly shocking and at the same time educational. Things that I never heard or read before. e.g. The fact that Gestapo, contrary to popular belief, was not a professional spy agency a la CIA or KGB, but basically a bunch of bureaucrats whose main work was to read and analyze the tons of denounces made by german citizens who denounced their own neighbors for being "apparently" (solid evidence wasn't necessary as you may guess) socialists, communists, anarchists, lesbians and homosexuals, jews, or plain and simply defeatist or critics of the Nazi regime.
So it wasn't because of the job of a huge number of highly qualified spies how Gestapo caught those dissidents or "supposed" dissidents and members of the so called "sub-human" minorities. Their heads were served on a plate of silver to the Gestapo by their own neighbors. Creepy.
Finally what I liked most about this docu is that it doesn't focus on the battles fought in the WW2 or in the Holocaust. There are already excellent documentaries that deals with that side of WW2 (The World at War, Shoah, etc.). The value of this docu is that it focuses on trying to understand how come a bunch of inept and incompetent right-wing fanatics reached the power in a highly civilized country and eventually started a war that took the life of 55 to 60 millions. How come such thing could have happened? Hitler couldn't have done it all by himself. The answer is that he received lots of "help" by countless people. He remains being the main guilty but there are many more to blame, from the allies who punished too severely Germany after WWI, to the rich capitalists who helped Hitler and his minions to reach the power, to most of the german people who embraced a racist ideology without major qualms.
And indeed it's a warning. Just look at what's happening right now, as we speak in Arizona. That's how everything started in Germany. Think about it.
Excellent educational documentary. A "must see" to any student or history buff.
The rise of the Nazis is in no way similar to what's going on in Arizona. Arizona is trying to enforce standing federal immigration laws, not round up mexicans and gas them.
shareAgreed. Illegals have no respect, trespass on private property with no regard for the law, and then complain when asked to leave.
It like me just barging in on someone's private party, telling them to give me a job at the party even though they don't need me, and then being indignant when they throw me out.
