The difficulty of the DS version

Who else appreciates the added challenge the DS version offers? As a veteran of the old SNES game I think it's pretty refreshing. The old cartridge was great for evoking all kinds of fond nostalgia but on my recent playthrough the game seemed so much easier than I remembered.

I heard they really increased the difficulty in the DS version so I went and picked it up. This game is crazy, man. Most people talk about how much more challenging the boss fights are. While that is true I've been surprised by how some of the regular enemies in any given area can totally demolish your party. The flame hounds in the Tower of Zot and the dark sages in the Lunar Subterrane are particularly perilous. Some of the old strategies no longer work in subduing the bosses either. Almost all of them have some vicious counter attack. You can't just level up and mindlessly conquer each foe by pounding them into submission with physical attacks. The game forces you to devise strategies and that is a welcome challenge in my opinion. If you're a candy ass or a rookie of Final Fantasy games you're really going to get pummeled by this one.

Fortunately the new character abilities help out to an extent. I'm really enjoying the customization that the new augment system offers. Even Edward isn't as completely useless as he was in the SNES game. He's still kind of a pansy but to a lesser degree.

What do you fans of the older versions think of the DS installment?

Ha Ha! Your medium is dying!

What do we think? I wish this was released for the consoles rather than the handheld systems. Seems like every cool remake of a classic gets ported to only handhelds...

I didn't really notice the ramped up difficulty until I returned from the moon to go into the Giant dungeon. I was careless along the way, skipped some augment's and several opportunities to level up, and I am just getting my ass handed to me. I had to start over and follow a guide. Which sucks but oh well I got thru most of the game without one.

And yeah I was surprised that even Edward was usable! Great remake, in my opinion, I hope the DS remakes more titles.

Yep. 'tis Shadowgate. I try and play it anytime I bust out the old NES. Great stuff.

And it's pretty fitting for this addicting website.

right on. they need an XBOX360 remake of Shadowgate.... and not the one on the N64...

Definitely. The N64 one was a total borefest.
