survey: best music ever used in Final Fantasy

I guess if you are here then you have opinions about things - tell us what you recon are the 5 Final Fantasy (any FF) songs that you would play in winamp on repeat and not get sick of.

Believe it or not I haven't ever played a single FF game myself... (pathetic, I know, and I know that I don't know what I'm missing)
and that's why I started this thread - I'm starting to learn FF songs with earnest but I want to know which ones to get. Being a musician I recon the music alone deserves a big applause! Using mostly classical instraments but the few FF compositions I've heard so far, dare I say, are way better than those classical pieces.

Never knew a piano can sound so good...

I've played the originals extensively FF1, FF2(IVj), FF3 (VIj), as well as FF5, Tactics, Tactics Advance, and some of FF9. I lost interest when VII came out, I wasn't a huge fan of the shift from Medieval fantasy to CyberPunk fantasy.

I can tell you this much; the music from Final Fantasy II (Final Fantasy IV in japan) is about as well orchestrated and moving as any video game you'll play. For its time, 14 year ago, it was jaw dropping when the Red Wings score starts up and it never lets up for the duration of the game. The tunes, I find, still hold up to this day. This was when overworld music was driving and tantalizing, boss battle music was edge of your seat white knuckle excitement, and end credit music elicited a tear in your eye. It was swashbuckling adventure and companionship all rolled up into a high quality digital audio. Wonderful music that was a critical element of one of the greatest RPG's ever, (personally speaking, the greatest game ever created.)

My five songs would be:

~ This is throughout the whole franchise...

1. "The Prelude" (any Final Fantasy)

2. "One Winged Angel" (Final Fantasy VII)

3. "The Legendary Beast" (Final Fantasy VIII)

4. "Memory of the Wind" (Final Fantasy III DS)

5. "Rydia" (Final Fantasy IV)

As you can tell, I like a mixture of battle and dramatic music.

in terms of music soundtracks composed by Uematsu for Final Fantasy, i would say that IV, VII and VII are the most compelling... choosing 5 of the best would be close to impossible for most die-hard Uematsu fans.. so my decision here is primarily based on orchestral value of the song, not by OSVs.
MY top 5( not in particular order either)

1. Elia, the Water Maiden (FF III)
2. Troian Beauty (FF IV)
3. Ending Theme (FF IV, arguably the best when done by the Tokyo Philharmonic)
4. Main theme (FF VII, sometimes referred to as Clouds Theme)
5. Main Theme (FF V)
6. Theme of Love (FF IV)

i just had to include a 6th song there just to make myself feel better...
these tracks here are orchestral compositions that i would argue as the best ever created... obviously there are a lot more that could of made this list but 5 is quite narrow..a better number would be to pick 20 to get a broader variance. these versions can all be found on the orchstral compilations of FF ( FF 1987~1994, 20022002 etc)i guess i really appreciate this music because i mplayed through the games which corresponded to it. i would suggest you try at least one of the earlier ones.

4. final fantasy 9 - You're Not Alone
3. final fantasy 6 - Aria Di Mezzo Carraterre; i dunno though, i think you might have to play through this game first.
2. every final fantasy - Final Fantasy (also called the prologue in FF4, Ahead on Our Way in FF1...i'd recommend the FF5 version just because of its simplicity)
1. final fantasy 5 - Battle with Gilgamesh; the best song in a final fantasy game, ever

i cant even think of another one to put in top 5, but here are some honorable mentions
final fantasy 4 - red wings (like most of these songs its because of where it is in the game...awesome opening scene)
final fantasy 5 - music box
final fantasy 4 - final battle
final fantasy 7 - one winged angel
final fantasy 1 - town theme
final fantasy 6 - devil's lab

just a note, the composer of all of these games, Nobuo Uematsu, retired after FF9 and after that game all of the music started going downhill....

I think my personal favorite is the "Castle Pandaemonium" track from FFII. The original NES rendition is good, but the new arrangement in the FF Origins version is absolutely epic.

reply

Uematsu retired after FFXI actually, but I agree that XII's music mostly can't hold a candle--though, I find it comes pretty close when Sakimoto (the new guy) writes his simplest melodies, like "Time of Rest."

My top five, in no particular order:

IX - Terra (not the VI version, though that's a good one too)
V - Battle with Gilgamesh
IX - Vama'alla Flamenco
VI - Celes
VII - J-E-N-O-V-A

All music, and I mean ALL, from Final Fantasy VI.
