Did they quietly just release the extended cut?

10th Kingdom is listed as

415 minutes on it's old DVD. the new DVD release is listed as 447? Did they add the scenes that were only on the Dutch release to the re-issue DVD or are they including the making of footage to that running length?

reply

On the new DVD set, the times are as follows:

Part 1: 1:25:45 (opening credits, movie, end credits)
Part 2: 1:24:39 (opening credits, movie, end credits)
Part 3: 1:25:20 (opening credits, movie, end credits)
Part 4: 1:24:37 (opening credits, movie, end credits)
Part 5: 1:24:29 (opening credits, movie, end credits)
Making of Special: 22:26

Total is 447 minutes and 16 seconds.

The original DVD set (which is listed as 417 minutes, not 415) must be the time without the making of special. If you add the 22 minutes to that, that makes it 439 minutes. The extra amount of time on the new DVD is the 4 extra opening credits and the 4 extra end credits. The original DVD only had the opening once and the credits at the very end of the final part of the movie, instead of each appearing before and after each part.

Am I sure they exist? Let me Clarify for you I OWN IT! I HAVE the Dutch cut.

Not everything online is hearsay.

It's Region 2 only but it's very easy to make your computer region free.

Never insult me by presuming I'd post something that only exists in rumor again.

See my above post. I revised it to give you a link to the long cut. The first review on Amazon UK (despite most people finding it helpful) is wrong. The Netherlands / Dutch cut is longer. Look at the running time. I own it. It's formatted the same way our Region 1 discs are (the older ones) in that the intro is at the start of disc one and the credits are at the end of the third disc. But there are several little extra bits of dialogue and the painting scene I described.

I'm impressed at how few Americans know about it.

The first time I saw the extended cut was on Ion, a cable / Satellite channel. They aired 10th Kingdom a few years ago, and since I know it pretty much by heart, I was surprised to see they were showing things I was not familiar with. I did a little snooping and found they had aired the region 2 Netherlands cut. How or why they did this I don't know. But I found it fairly easily on Amazon UK.

It's not that hard to make your computer able to play region 2 discs. I was just sort of hoping they finally released the extended cut to region 1.

Most people don't know it exists, they think the "extended cut" is the ordinary Region 1 DVD because some of the VHS releases are evens shorter still.

The Dutch / Netherlands release is longer. I own it. It's region 2 format. Region 2 plays faster than Region 1 so it actually should be shorter but it's not, instead it's over forty minutes longer and like the first American release it only has the opening and closing credits and the start and end of the set so that can't be used to account for the extra running length.

It has the very scenes I described because I OWN IT! If you want screen grabs I can get them.

I've contacted Sonar Entertainment - who owns the rights to the mini-series - to see what they know about this extended version and why it was never released in the U.S. When they send me a reply, I'll post it here. Hopefully we can get some answers because as much as I'm enjoying the new set I recently bought, all I can think about now is how much I want a copy of the version YOU have.

I'd like to see scene grabs. I've been a fan since the beginning and snatched up the vhs edition when it was being offered at the time the series first aired. Then a few years later I got it on dvd. The idea that there's a version I haven't seen before however slight the difference might be has very intrigued.

I'll rip some later tonight. For the most part it's just slightly larger chunks of dialogue but one part that distinctly has different scenes is in Peep Town.

I'm a bit tired and finding the specific moments is like looking for a needle in a hey stack.

Most of the extended moments in the Dutch DVD are just longer parts of dialogue.

Here's a shot of wolf with red eyes (which does not exist on the Region 1 DVD). His eyes still turn yellow in this scene but they flash yellow twice and then turn red.

Here is The queen talking to Wolf in Kissing town. And yes, this scene is in the region 1 DVD but it is considerably longer here.

There's also a scene where she appears to wolf in a painting at some point in disc 2 but I am having trouble finding it, it's a very, very brief scene.

This is all on the region 2 Dutch cut of 10th Kingdom which the UK Amazon has several reviews claiming it's not really extended. As someone who had the American cut virtually memorized for almost a decade, yes, the Dutch cut is longer. Mostly it's just longer chunks of dialogue here and there but there are a few actual images that are not in the American cut. I wish I could find the scene with the painting for you but I'm too busy to watch the whole thing all the way through right now.

I don't know what has been included in the re-release but when originally broadcast, the miniseries ran 2 hours/night for 5 nights. Immediately after it ended, I purchased the VHS, which was in the form of three VHS tapes for a total of 426 minutes, which would be equivalent of 10 hours minus commercials. When NBC broadcast it again the following year, they cut it down to either 6 or 8 hours (can't remember which as it was 12 years ago.) I heard that it was the edited version when released in DVD format.

It's too bad it was edited because NBC removed a great many cute bits. Hopefully they have been added back into the re-release.
