Post-9/11

So I bought Was tun, wenn’s brennt? (What to do in case of fire?) at Big Lots (a deep-discount retailer) for like $4 dollars American a while back and just got around to actually watching it; grad school cuts into your time. I loved the movie and all that, but what really struck me is how dangerous this film feels in the U.S. of A today. Simply put, no American studio would release this film right now; especially a major like Columbia/Tri-Star, which is rather sad. In the post-9/11 landscape, you would never see a comedic drama about “terrorist” in which the characters are actually normal people like the characters here. When you really think about it we, in the U.S., have really lost many subjects we can talk about comfortably any more; it’s still the U.S. so we have the freedom to do so, but the social pressure doesn’t make it a comfortable situation. I would recommend watching this movie just to think about how much this film feels like it’s from a completely different time today where a group of radicals bombs a police station and you want them to get away with it, instead of the cardboard baddies of 24.

They were fighting fascist huh? Why didn't they go over to the other side of the Wall and put their money where their mouths were?

reply

Why? They already were in the American controlled Western part of the city :)

reply

Oh, aorry, I meant the Workers' Paradise part of the city. They would have been so tolerant of their antics there.

You really are ignorant, what do you mean go to the other side? These people are anarchists not communists ( regarding at least the authoritarian perspective of socialism).
My advice to you :start reading books, educate yourself so people won't laugh at you when you enter a debate!

Anarchists to you; destructive self centered parasites to me. OK< it looked like a lot of fun, so what. What have anarachists accomplished?, ZED. They exists on the largess and tolerance of a democratic, prosperous society. The real tyrants would have murdered or co-opted them in a flash!

reply

Like i said you really need to educate yourself better. The anarchist movement is not just a hobby for the prosperous western kids, anarchism predates communism, anarchists have died by the thousands fighting fascists like Franco in the Spanish civil war, or wealthy landlords in the case of Emiliano Zapata. You talk about prosperity, are you so sure that everyone in your community is as prosperous as you? And even if that was the case how do you think we 've accomplished that? you should know that the western world, 20% of the planet's population consumes more than 80% of the planet's product, we enjoy the fruit of other people's labor those you, cynically, call the "3rd world". You talk of "democracy", are you sure about that? do you honestly feel that your voice will make any differenc? Sure you're free to speak your mind when you chat with your friends, but only those with extreme wealth are actually heard, it is only their opinion that matters in the end. As for you, you get to chose between A and B every four years. I recommend you read some history books and find out exactly how the modern nation- state model was created, by whom and for what purpose, you 'll be surprised, its actually a fairly modern idea. Some ancient history would also help, read about Athens and how real Democracy worked it doesn't differ to much from the anarchist' views and it has nothing to do with modern "democracy"

So becoming a derelict or destructive parasite is the answer? Do you imagine that if we didn't exploit the resources of the third world, the natives would be better off? Nobody said we were perfect but the anarchists depicted in this movie were basically taking the Soviet's side, so they are the last to be lecturing people about freedom. Our democracy isn't perfect but we are hardly some race of tyrants.

BTW, the anarchists lost the Spanish Civil War, so woop dee doo!

reply

Well, obviously you did not get it. Anarchists in general, and these in specific, have NOTHING in common with communists. In fact, would they have crossed the wall, they would wery likely have landed in prison or worse. However, the whole idea of Anarchism is, there should be no control by ANY kind of state. That is as opposite as you can get to a communist system where the state controls virtually everything. Frankly, to say that they're all th same is plain ignorant. Your choice of words makes it seem, you have a very black-and-white view of the world anyway, so I'll leave it at that.

In theory they are totally different, you are right. But it seemed that anarchists like these mainly worked to undermine the west more than the Comunist block countries. Besides, anarchism leads to anarchy, which in the end leads to far worse oppression since even a fascistic, authoritarian state is better than no law and order at all.

Since you are so freaking enlightened, as opposed to a moron like me, then you should not only point out the flaws in my logic but point me to ONE *beep* modern society that is run on the anarchist principles that the losers in this movie expoused!

To be fair, someone already pointed out the flaws in your 'logic'.
