Great first half, horrible second half

It started out great!
The build up and the relationship between those two was amazing.

And then, they made it too sleezy, too serious, too high-brow.
They brought so many characters into the picture,
the story got watered down.
The intimacy was lost
The atmosphere was changed and it was like watching a noon tv movie.

And it ended with so many cliched lines and scenes I cant even
begin to describe.

So, it was a horrible disappointment, the second half of this movie.

I think it got better as it went on, I thought there relationship was a wee bit forced in the beginning, but in the second half it seemed more genuine to me. It didn't have the ending we deserved, but the one we needed. (Paraphrasing from The Dark Knight there lol)

Wayne Enterprises buys and sells companies like Stark Industries

I agree completely with the OP. I really enjoyed the first hour of this film some 10 years ago, I believe it was at the Seattle International Film Festival. The surreal directorial flourishes that took us inside J's head, combined with the (thankfully) understated performance by Albert Brooks, were immensely entertaining. But as soon as R went to the hospital, and the long-lost son was introduced, the whole thing turned into some awful melodramatic network 1980s disease-of-the-week movie. But half a good movie is better than none, so I rate "My First Mister" a 6/10.

I felt the same. Although there were some rough spots in the first half, it was very good. The second half turned into a Hallmark film. Disappointing.
