More movies like this

Does anyone have any clue what other movies are like this? I love this movie and I want to see more movies like this one.

The only other movie I can think of that is somewhat like "My First Mister" is "Harold and Maude." The age gap is wider, the youngest being male, but it's a very sweet story.

When it is suddenly revealed that he has a disease reminded me of LOVE STORY. However, this one I liked a lot better.

there is another film very similar to this one...its also about a girl and an old bloak... I think he was her teacher...so they leave the city and drive through the USA ( they have sex, I think thats why that film wasnt so succesful/popular)

reply

Lolita? Her step-father, not her teacher. But he's obsessed/in love/lust with her and they drive around America. From the book of the same name by Vladimir Nabakov. I think. I'm too lazy to check :P

But Lolita is a lot darker than My First Mister. The relationship is a lot more intense.

I have a movie that although NOT a Generation gap movie has the same feeling of warmth .... "Almost Salinas" .. it's an almost none story, in that nothing much happens, so I suggest watching it when there's nothing else important to do, and maybe an empty mind ,o) ... BUT!!! it leaves you with a lovely warm glow afterwards!!! ....

ghostworld with steve buscemi and thora birch!

reply

Yup! I second that! Ghostworld I feel is a little more "edgier" than this film. Highly recommended!

I agree, it seems hollywood just will not do these types of heartwarming, charactor driven (Talent Needed) films, with all the techno special effects garbage they turn out, it is nice to see a wonderful film like this, and i also wish there were more of them.

I think it depends on what you mean by movies 'like this'. I see most people suggested movies with similar themes and they suggested some good ones, IMO.

I think you might also like some of the other movies Christine Lahti has been in. Her movies are not always about the same thing and they a lot of them have a quirkiness to them. I'm thinking of "leaving Normal' and "Housekeeping' as two examples of what I mean. I love movies that don't seem to make it big at the box office but that have a lot of substance to them. I end up going with foreign movies a lot because they seem to be able to pull that off. The rise of the Indie movie has improved the numbers as well.

Now I'm going to have to rent those movies I just sugggested to you. I haven't seen them in ages and they were really good.

Similarly themed on family relationships, love and mortality I kept thinking of Robin Williams' Andrew in Bicentenial Man for some reason. True, there was a relevant amount of poignancy that makes you cry, the mortality part of the film especially and we can't just compare one tear jerker with another, but the heart strings are pulled in this film and the effect is not dissimilar.

We can't merely race headlong into moments as youngsters brashly do. We have to learn to savour and compartmentalise life and mortality. I expected Hard Candy when I just watched this movie but was glad that it was so engrossing and had gradually exposing characters with enough vagueness for the viewer to find some sort of connections, right or wrong, with the elements of the characters and their needs and wants in relationships to enjoy the viewing in our own personal ways.

I love the movie Lost In Translation because it is the story of a middle aged man who becomes friends with a girl in her mid 20's. The story line is great and the friendship they have is wonderful to watch.

reply

I Agree, an excellent film
