AWFUL..BAD movie

This was a terrible movie. Where do I start?

The acting was bad (which is shocking for Hugh Laurie), lousy writing, all around bad performances from the leads. The supporting comedic characters were much better, though the director was a bit over the top, which took away from his basically decent showing. Emma Thompson, however, was just annoying.

Laurie phoned in his performance --there was zero chemistry with Richardson. His talent was totally wasted--why did he ever get talked into this role?
His work in House shows that he should drop the comedy--even though that was his bread and butter for years in England--and move on to drama roles. And pair him up with some intelligent, sexy actress and let the sparks fly...

One of the horrors of actors becoming famous is that everyone goes back to check out your early movies. This one should be vaulted with the key thrown away.

Yeah, it sucks pretty badly but I don't think for the reasons you mention.
Basically the script blows chunks. I don't think the acting is bad at all but as the saying goes, "you can't polish a turd". I think this accounts for the lack of chemistry as Hugh Laurie is a very fine actor. Joely Richardson is extremely talented too and surely one of the most intelligent and sexy actresses in Britain. I'd watch it again for her but that's about it. Oh, and the ending made me feel quite bilious with an utterly implausable reconciliation completely at odds with Richardsons strong character. If you're not a JR fan, avoid this one like the plague...

House is such an annoying character and the show is boring and repetitious. I really don't see the appeal of it. I like Laurie better in this movie.

You must be joking. I love house, but it doesn't mean that Hugh Laurie is any less gifted a comedian. Watch blackadder, or his sketches with the equally brilliant Stephen Fry, and perhaps you will see past your doubts.
