Some might find this sacreligious...

... but I really can't stand Rowan Atkinson. I found his role in this movie particularly loathsome, but felt similarly about his exaggerated trainee vicar character in Four Weddings and a Funeral. I'm sure that he's a very nice person in real life etc. etc., but why does he always play these over-the-top characters? One exception which I did appreciate was the successful stage comic actor he played in "The Tall Guy" for whom Jeff Goldblum's character works. It seemed to virtually be a self-parody, and while he may have been a complete bastard in his "off-stage" persona, at least we were spared the stupid voices and facial expressions.
I have to say I really enjoyed Ben Elton's book, but was disappointed by this film adaptation. In my opinion, the solitary high point was Tom Hollander, who by contrast, I have thoroughly enjoyed in every role I've seen him in, especially "Bedrooms and Hallways".

Watch Blackadder. He's in his prime in it. In fact, my quote is from it, series two:

"you look like a bird who's swallowed a plate"

I really never got Rowan Atkinson. I don't think "Mr. Bean" is funny and his role as the doctor is just a variation on that.

reply

Wow. Congratulations. You were born with no sense of humour whatsoever. If you don't get Rowan Atkinson, you won't get anyone.

reply

I agree on "Bean". Have a go at Blackadder instead.

"Life without you is like a broken pencil. Pointless."

As everyone said, watch some Blackadder. Maybe you'll understand then.

I agree, I don't like Rowan Atkinson usually...not even in Blackadder. I think Hugh Laurie or Stephen Fry or the Pythons are much better.

reply

Rowan is far funnier than Hugh or Stephen.
Both Hugh and Stephen overacted slightly in Blackadder whereas I think Rowan did it just right.

reply

I love him, especially with a turkey stuck on his head.

I always find Rowan's characters to be ridiculously hilarious. They're always so awkward and unseemly, just like Mr. Bean I suppose lol. His gynaecologist character in this film was quite humorous I thought. His facial expressions while he was examining her were so typical of him, just so funny. And then when he was showing the photos and saying "You've got beautiful guts" or something like that, it was one of those classic "WTF?!" moments you always have at least once with him in any film. It was like, just go with it, this is Rowan Atkinson!! ;)
