Best Movie Ever Made?

IMO it is.

First its timely with the issues of refugees and global unrest boiling over.
Second it has an effective religious element but without being heavy handed about it.
(Clearly the film is showing a world of people with stifled broken souls , so broken they cannot have children anymore. But the one girl-a refugee-gets pregnant and the main character eventually goes from being despondent and indifferent to really caring about the baby)
Though I am a reluctant atheist, I did see a documentary on Christ which spoke how prior to Christ goodness was in the hands of the Supreme Being but Christ brought the idea of humans bring the goodness into the world. The were others during this axial age--Buddha, Confucius etc who brought similar messages.
This film reminds me of that brave human side of religion. Not one where some outside Being is in control but the humans.

Third the film's cinematic techniques enhance its message: The long takes beside giveing the film a cinema verite feel, also make some scenes more moving. In particular when Theo and Kee bring the baby out during the battle and the soldiers stop fighting. This scene i feel is up there with some of the greats as one of the best scenes ina movie ever.

Fourth the film is a genre film for sure: the by now well overdone dystopian future genre. But it uses the genre as a frame work and builds on it. Unlike in other dystopes where the protag finally sees the errors of the empire and leads a revolt, Theo in this one has already seen bitter rebellion. He is now trying something better which as corny as it may sound is love. The love for Kee's baby. The film also transcennds the genre in another way. Unlike others where there is a distinct villain, here the villain is societies soullessness. Even the fishes who first appear to be the "good guys" are corrupt. The rebellion is part of the problem. Along with Brazil Children of Men is easily one of the best of this genre. Godfather may have been one of the best organized crime/gangster films but the serious dystopian films are more relevant and as such I believe this is greatest movie ever made.

Good post and yes.

If I were to teach a film studies course, Children of Men would certainly be part of the curriculum.

It was part of mine, during a sci fi showcase. Professor picked this and Blade Runner.

Well, my son would agree with you. He ranks this as his favorite movie of all time.

I give it high marks for it's thematic presentation and plausible content, as well as its tight direction and very good acting.

Clive Owen has a stage presence that is one of the most compelling in cinema.

And I agree with what seems to be your main point that sacrificial love is the greatest love of all. Christ's love for humanity is beautifully captured in the final moments of Theo's life, struggling to get the pregnant mother to safety - knowing he's not going to make it.

Yes to all of your points. I find myself thinking more and more about this film as of late with the ISIS attacks and resulting pushback on immigration we're facing.

I first watched this movie when it was first released and I liked it then. However, it seems that the more I watch it x the better it gets. I just watched it today after not having watched it for 3 or 4 years, and the movie had me in tears. Not so much for a sad scene or nothing like that, but more for the tone and feel of it. It made a connection with issues we have with society today and it got me emotional. That scene where everyone stopped fighting as Theo and kee were leaving the building , everyone stopping to see the baby. ...that scene gets me everytime. Just BEAUTIFUL. I agree with the post that this might be the best movie of all time or at least it's up there for me
Masterpiece!
