Just watched it for the first time

And holy crap, with the rise (and hopeful YUGE fall) of Trump, I couldn't help but think of the similarities. Germany is regretting Merckel's decision to let in the Syrian refugees, and I can vividly imagine the events of this movie taking place in the very near future. I won't get too political, but there's a happy medium regarding the refugees, somewhere between Merckel and Trump.

I recently rewatched it for the third time and yes, it feels even more relevant now. I agree with what you said, except that I don't think we are talking "near" future by any stretch. Bad decisions may escalate things but not to this extent. 40-50 years from now, perhaps.

Also, this movie had no coherent policy towards immigrants, they are killing them randomly, stripping them of their valuables and putting others in camps where they are left to starve. Sounds more like a throwback to Nazi Germany, imho.
