I didn't hear it mentioned, but I may have missed it. Were animals affected by the infertility, or only humans?

Only humans.

Nope. The reason you see so many animals throughout the film is because they can still breed and humans often used them as replacements for children.

Don't forget that it had been 18 years of infertility. If it had affected animals, theres no way we would have seen so many dogs, or any at all. Dogs dont even live that long usually.
