I was going to see this movie but then I realized the plot parallels between a childless society and what America's far right wing might "theorize" about abortion. Are these concerns unfounded or would I be offended by the movie's message? (I personally find pro-life ideology to be very misoginystic myself, but to each his own.)
"Are these concerns unfounded or would I be offended by the movie's message?"
The concerns are unfounded. When watching this movie, I never once thought about the American far right's stance on abortion.
I can't think of anything in the movie that could really be called "offensive". There was nothing relevant to the pro-life ideology that I noticed. I've got Children of Men on DVD so I've watched it a few times.
"If you equate a human baby to bacteria..... wow!! Just wow......"
If you equate abortion to the murder of babies.....wow!! Just wow......
And that will be my final word on the matter. We wouldn't want this thread to degenerate into one of those emotionally charged, heated, pointless, go-nowhere internet arguments about what constitutes a human life now, would we?
Along with animal rights, euthenasia and capital punishment, abortion is one of those ticklish topics that never leads to a constructive resolution. Not really sure why the OP brought it up actually.
Abortion is not addressed in the movie at all. In a world where people can't get pregnant at all abortion is kind of irrelevant. I can see your point though. If something like this were to happen members of the pro-life movement would probably think that God punished us for abortion by taking away our ability to give birth. They did address the fact that there is religious zealotry and I can't remember if they had it in the movie but in the book they mentioned people flagellating themselves for religious reasons in hopes that maybe it would bring people's fertility back.
But there is no message about abortion in the film whatsoever and I don't think the film was really misogynistic either. I guess in some ways you could view the fact that it focuses on a woman who was the first woman to be pregnant in a generation could be interpreted as pro-life but there is no direct pro- or antiabortion message to the film.
You wanna talk about a stupid comment!! Abortion is intentionally ending a human life. Miscarriages and periods are not. It's scary you don't know the difference.
