'F' word was ok on this show, but its not now...

I remember watching this show and I thought they used to say the "F" word all the time. This was on regular prime time Fox right?

Noone complained back in 1999, but now apparently its a problem to use the "F" word on TV???

So dumb....

reply

it was always bleeped out though

reply

when it aired in the uk, it was never bleeped out, i dont see what the fuss is, im not sure what time it aired in the usa, but here if its after 9pm its fine on cable and non cable stations, if you want to use the f bomb.

reply

if they were to do that in the us the fcc would flip and make them pay fines for every time it's said only cable station here that is willign to do that is comedy central and its always at 1 in the morning plus i can see why they would be pissed at 9 cause most kids here atleast don;t usually go to sleep till 10

reply

the fcc only fines networks and the afiliates for showing "innaprpriate" material during a certain timeframe in which children could be watching. Thats why comedy central gets away with it by shwoing unedited stuff late because the fcc doesnt have the same sanctions after like 11pm.

Thank God for the FCC, We might actually get to indulge ourselves in the first amendment if it weren't for their protection of our delicate sensibilities.

I never understood the big dea about cuss words anyways. They're just words, right?

Ah, one of my all-time favorite quotes, from the Dustin Hoffman film about Lenny Bruce, fits into this conversation:

Lenny Bruce: F you." Never understood that insult, because f-ing someone is actually really pleasant. If we're trying to be mean, we should say un-f you!"

(Funny, this quote is listed in its entirety on the quotes page for "Lenny," but I can't post it here, even with astericks in the f-word... that's censorship for ya!)

"just words" is exactly correct -- look on Youtube etc. for "Frank Zappa Crossfire", it's nothing new, the legislating-morality nonsense... Oh, and also look for the "Family Guy FCC Song" ^_^

No, Comedy Central is a cable network so they can get away with it. Fox was regular network, over the air, broadcast. Meaning that they can be finned for doing stuff at any time that the FCC sees fit.

Between 10PM and 6AM, the FCC is not listening. Bad words are ok on the radio and TV.

Further limitations are put in place by the networks to follow "good taste" and avoid pissing off the FCC. (not sure if p1ssing will get censored here or not)

I am of the same opinion. It's just words. Some languages don't even have "bad words".... such as Japanese. The fact that people still cringe over the F word kills me. (I would write it out but it won't let me) It's not like the word was invented in the last 50 years or something.

I blame bible thumpers and those who think that everyone in America is a bible thumper. Inflated percentages of people who claim they are Christian and/or actually go to churches are the 85% demographic. I'd like to break that down further and see how many real Christians who aren't so hyprocritical are actually worried about this language.

The bible didn't say the F word is bad, hell... the F word was far from existence when the bible was written in Hebrew, no?

i think even nudity is even okay after 10pm on stations, I know was caught by surprise when the sci-fi channel had some stuff that only the premium channels would carry. I checked the time and it was only 1020pm..I think it's getting pretty relaxed now. But on the show, i think i remember the commerical for he was saying the f-word and getting bleeped out.

Would I rather be feared or loved? Um.. both. I want people to be afraid of how much they love me.

Watch the amazing documentary named, well, I can't tell you what it's named, for some hypocritcal reason. Its title is one word, and it is the-f-word-I-can't-type-here-even-though-I-can-give-you-guys-the-imdb-link http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0486585/

Anyway, I believe it was Lenny Bruce who was quoted in this movie as giving the most brilliant, most concise argument against censorship EVER - "If you can't say *beep* then you can't say *beep* the president'". Sounded unbelievably intelligent when I heard it (well, technically "when I read it", as the quote was printed on the screen). It takes away the basic right of free speech from those who may be less articulate, less intelligent, or those who just want to be more concise or more offensive (because you have to admit, *beep* the president!" has a QUITE different meaning than "I don't think Bush is a very good president.").

Re-read your Orwell, people. By letting others take away what words we can use, we have a lesser ability to express ourselves. I thought it was bad enough when, around the time of the OJ Simpson trial, newscasters had to start saying "the n-word", but now you have to say "the f-word" when referring to another word for gay people that, quite honestly, most gay people couldn't care less if it was used!

OK, I'm shutting off my free speech now before I *REALLY* start ranting! Or before "the admistrator removes this message".

This is an old post, but anyway...

No, you can't get away with whatever you want between 10pm and 6am on the radio and network TV (NBC, ABC, FOX, CBS).

Cable channels (subscribers-only) like Comedy Central, Sci-Fi, FX, USA, etc are outside of the FCC's jurisdiction and can theoretically air HBO-type TV-MA stuff anytime, but they are still controlled by their advertisers, which HBO isn't. They make the deal that TV-MA stuff will wait until after 10pm. Has nothing to do with the FCC.

Spoken like another of the many anti-religion bigots. You don't have a clue as to what religion or Christianity really is. Going to church has little to do with religious theology. People go to church to praise God in a community setting and for Catholics to admit failings and receive forgiveness. They attend church to hear about the correct way to live by the example of Jesus loving and forgiving his enemies. One is required to lives their religion whether in or outside of church. 'Bible Thumpers' as you disparagingly and insultingly refer to them do not care about your words as much as their own words. If you want to swear do so in the knowledge that it reflects upon you. A 'bible thumper' will not be hurt in God's eyes by your words.
Consider what Peter Hitchens (brother of the late militant atheist Christopher Hitches) wrote, "When one acts outside of their religious tenets, you blame the person not the religion." By your reasoning if a police office breaks the law then all laws are wrong. If a doctor killed a patient, then all medicine is wrong. This is wrong thinking. You blame the person, not the profession. This hypocrisy, as you call it, is actually handled well by Christianity. Its called forgiveness, something you apparently do not possess. People will not go away simply because you don't like them. People are flawed. They err. They sin. Christians forgive as directed by their God. What would you do? Forgive or hate. Sounds like the latter.

Fox bleeped out the swearing when it originally aired the episodes. I should point out that Fox has to adhere to FCC guidelines because it is an over-the-air broadcast network. The FCC has no jurisdiction over cable/satellite channels. The only law about what basic cable channels are allowed to air says that it is illegal for a basic cable channel to show hardcore pornography between the hours of 6AM - 10PM. Basic cable channels decide what to allow based on what their viewers and especially what their sponsors want.

I have done extensive study and written a book on language. I had the distinct joy of discussing my findings with one Frank Zappa backstage after a concert in Massachusetts in the mid 80's. We disagreed but I was impressed by his tolerance and acceptance of my opposing viewpoint. I told him that words were not just letters arranged into some predefined pattern but conveyed meaning, emotion, intent, instructions. Words can heal or hurt, cure or kill. They can motivate or inhibit. They can be useful or useless. They are not just words. One does not use the words *beep* you' without repercussion. One does not use the words 'I love you' without long term consequences. Language is a weapon in disguise.
Consider this to all who think these are just words. Your mothers are the biggest whore sluts that ever existed. I have spoken to people who know them and they assure me that they will perform any act with any human or any animal for a penny. You mother is ugly and smells bad due to non-existent hygiene. She is equally stupid and gave birth to stupid children.
If you had no reaction to those words then consider that you are wrong, dead wrong. You are stupid and ignorant. You obviously have no education and are probably brain damaged.
If you had no reaction to that paragraph then I guess you are an unfeeling insensitive twit. You are incapable of love and emotion. You deserve to be shot on sight. You are worthless. Your spouse or significant other is equally as bad.

Oh by the way, these are just words. They mean nothing. There is no reason to respond to this post. If you do then you are defying your position that what I just said are just words.

Or are they?
