The slang is way off!

I grew up in Chicago on the South side. This movie is corny, I don't know anyone that said "slamming" or "tight & *beep* broke out into a "hip hop" dance in the school cafeteria.

reply

This is movie is 13 years old. The slang isn't off.

I'm aware, I was in high school when this movie came out. Went to a majority black/Hispanic school, in Chicago, lived in a majority black neighborhood. No one talked or acted like this. Seems like it should have been set in New York.

reply

SLAMMIN!!!! 😂

reply

I was in my final year of high school when this movie came out. I went to school in Killeen, Texas and most of the people at my school were black and Hispanic also. I don't think we used the words "slammin", I think we used "tight" and maybe some others.

reply

Oh, yeah. Everything was "tight" in 2001. Haha!

reply

Who cares?! It's just a movie!!!!!!

reply

Who cares?!
Agreed. The black director should have hired an appropriate "slang" coach. What an idiotic thread!🐭

reply

I remember when this movie came out, and assumed the slang was believable, but looking back 14 years late, it sounds so horrible, forced/unnatural. Didn't realize how much it depended on racial stereotypes.

This movie really should've been set in New York. It had that New York feel and I had to keep reminding myself it's based in Chicago.

Slammin is from the last 80's, early 90s. At least on the east coast.

reply

It looks like I replied to this on the old IMDb boards, but I have a few examples to prove my point.

JBeez coming through - Jungle Brothers released 1989

Uncle Sam, Mike G, Baby Bam
Road-manager, yeah, this joint is slammin'

Strobelite Honey - Black Sheep released 1991

Yes, you sweetie, although it's hard to see thee
I see your silhouette and what I see has got me needy
I need you for a second of your time
But then I reckon that a second is too short let me try
"You're slammin!"

Both groups are from New York.

This is what I thought too. Also when her boyfriend is taking the tain to her NYC audition the movie makes it seem like it's just a few hours away. It would be 21 hours away!

Plus Chenile has a thick Bronx accent.

reply

LMAO...IS THE SLANG WHAT BOTHERED YOU?...LMAO
