I beg to disagree with you on your critique of this documentary.

First off, it is a documentary, not a movie, or art film. In my opinion if we wanted slick, fancy camera work, we would go see The Matrix.
Secondly, I really don't think 93 minutes is unreasonably long. I thought it was a fascinating subject.
I do however agree with you about the "whining" and the cheesy picture book.
