Dub mis-casting

I know complaining about dubs is a cliché, but I just can’t ignore the goof they made with this one…Noboru sounds like a small child. He’s in HIGH SCHOOL. He must be 15 or 16 years old! I mean, there was even that scene where he sees someone he knows from school who says he got into college! And since when do middle-schoolers take exams? They just didn't pay enough attention when casting this one.

It's a fairly good dub, otherwise.

Actually I think he was in junior high school wasnt he? Maybe Im wrong. Atleast they hired Tress MacNeille. It was great recognising her voice since she does the voices for Agnes Skinner, Jimbo Jones and probably a few other characters from The Simpsons.

reply

no he's in high school. His uniform gives that away.

It might interest you to know that in Japanese and Chinese schools, students must take exams to proceed to the next level of education ; primary to middle school, and then middle school to high school.....

.....that's all....

But what about when he met the guy who got into college? That guy was a third-year when he was a first-year, and now that Noboru's a second-year, this guy's in college.

Noboru sounds like a very young boy in the dub. My guess is that they just didn't pay enough attention and just looked at the art, where he indeed doesn't look like a nearly-adult.

So why are you watching dub?

reply

Jesus Christ, dude - let him point it out!

Enjoy your egg whites.

reply

Well, yes, of course - but the point of my comment was that if you watch the film with the director's own cast you won't get this sort of mistake happening.

BTW, if anyone's interested, our children here in the UK take exams at 11 or 13 to get into what we call secondary or senior school - what the US calls junior high.

I thought it worked. The casting for Yamadas was some of the best casting they've done, next to Mononoke, perhaps.

Best thing ever.

I was quite happy with the English casting.

Kind of a drag, huh? Stuck in a place like Genoa City.
