Message to Ghibli fans: Only Yesterday petition

This message has nothing to do with My Neighbors the Yamadas in particular. It's about another film by the same studio. It was posted here in order to get as much attention as possible from Ghibli fans. Sorry about any trouble or annoyance this may have caused.

Please sign the petition to convince Disney to dub Ghibli's 1991 film "Only Yesterday" into English. This petition was started by Ghibli's largest English-language fansite, nausicaa.net, and we want 500 signatures by the end of November 2007.

Thanks to those who have already signed it and to those who sign it now.

edit #1: Well, the petition has been submitted with 566 signatures. I'll keep you all posted on what happens now.

edit #2: It's been over a month and Disney hasn't even written back. I'd like to extend the amount from its current 616 to 1,000.

edit #3: We're switching our tactic from this petition to another one, which is on Turner Classic Movie's (TCM's) webpage. This one is more respected and already has over 2,500 signatures.

Hello, I've noticed this post all around the anime boards. If it's not too late, can I just ask, why did you want a dubbed version? Dubs are fine for children who can't yet read, but Only Yesterday is not a children's film. I don't mean it's 'unsuitable', but I think it appeals more to adults who will appreciate the bittersweet joys of looking back.

reply

Yeah, I repeated this post on all the Ghibli boards, since it concerns Ghibli fans.

Well, it's for a few different reasons. Some people, and not just children, won't bother with subtitles for whatever reason. But, on a lighter side, I think that getting it dubbed would increase awareness of the film among anime fans.

I posted that a while ago. I hope that Disney decides to release it along with Tales from Earthsea and Ponyo on a Cliff. They've been releasing the films in sets of threes, after all.

To be honest, I don't think 'fans' who can't be bothered to read subs are worth having.

I just don't understand it; to watch a Japanese film with American voiceovers seem pointless to me, you're only getting half the experience. I suppose it's OK for stuff like Dragonball-Z and other crash-bang-wallop numbers, but Ghibli doesn't do that sort of thing.

It takes all sorts, I suppose. Cheers.

Disney will not release this one because they have a no-cuts policy with Studio Ghibli and Disney was not keen on the references to menstruation and all that jazz. Therefore it will never be dubbed in English. The end.

reply

They may easily release it through one of their subsidiaries, as they did with Princess Mononoke through Miramax, which is far more mature than Only Yesterday in terms of graphic content. Case reopened.

I too wish that this film will get an official release in North America, along with Ocean Waves and some of Isao Takahata's earlier work. (Horus:Prince of the Sun, Gauche the Cellist, Jarinko Chie etc.) Fortunately I found a high quality bootleg version of Ocean Waves. (it also came with "On Your Mark" on the disc) I never usually buy bootlegs, but I made one exception for that film. I've also been able to see the earlier Takahata's films through Torrents.

Fortunately my DVD player is region free and I was able to import the UK release of Only Yesterday from Amazon.uk, along with Horus:Prince of the Sun. (although they call it Little Norse Prince)

You can watch just about any movie on the Internet, I suppose, if you know where to look.

I once considered asking the anime club at my school if they'd tackle a fandub of Ocean Waves as a yearly project, but I eventually decided against it.

Did Only Yesterday and Ocean Waves ever get a release over in North America? I really hope so as we got fantastic releases of both movies over here in the UK and I hate to think of anyone missing out.

Not to my knowledge. Speaking of which, it is now Studio Ghibli Season in the UK on Film 4, with this film as the opener. Ocean Waves airs tomorrow, Only Yesterday next week.
