What an interesting concept

I recently viewed My neughbour the yamadas and I became quite intrigued with the particular animation utilized, apart from Miyazaki it is in my humble opinion that Isao Takahata is one of the finest directors in the genre of anime

Oh I see it all now you're just a bunch of yes men.
C. Montgomery Burns.

Typical derogatory remark from a child who has a penchant for mainstream rap and compulsive masturbation, say you wouldn't happen to be from the worst country in the world would you a.k.a New Zealand if so enjoy the "haka" you ignorant fool. I would also like to correct a spelling error in my previous header, neighbour that is all.

Well I guess being from NZ exceeds being from Aust so if you want to pay out NZ culture you seem to be like a typical Aussie drinking beer looking like a slob who just got out of bed screaming Aussie Aussie Aussie Oi Oi Oi well thats must mean you must also be what you so blandly called me an "ignorant fool". also im guessing you just get up and straight to the couch and watch movies all day long getting other people to change the disk for you without getting the least bit of exercise. is that the case because i beleive that it is.

The difference being, of course, that Yamadas is based on a comic strip. Would you want, for instance, Peanuts to look like Fantasia?

reply

It's a brilliant visual style, one that was very unique for its time. There's really nothing to compare it to, aside from Sunday comic strips like Peanuts or Calvin and Hobbes. Speaking of which, if you were to make a Calvin and Hobbes movie, this would be the way to do it.

Studio Ghibli has used Takahata's zen watercolor style numerous times since Yamada-kun, usually for television commercials and the two Ghiblies short films. I'd like to see someone in the States create something like this, since it offers new ideas for computer animation that have never really been tried here.

Yamada-kun's style is largely based upon the Japanese ideas of negative space and zen. You wouldn't think that this movie uses more drawing than Mononoke, but it does.

Takahata is not an animator himself, which is largely why he is able to shift from one visual style to another. His influences are very wide, ranging from a lot of French and Russian animation, to the cinema of the French New Wave, Italian Neo-Realism, Jean Renoir, Fellini, De Sica, and Ozu.

Of course, it also helps that Takahata and Miyazaki are largely responsible for giving birth to modern anime.

I would also like to see the States come up with this. The U.s wouldn't come close. Dont get me wrong i love Studio Ghilbli i just didn't enjoy this to the other films they have made. But like wht we all have is called Personal Opinion.

I'd dare even go further and say he's one of the finest directors period. At least he's one of my favorites.

Takahata is the hidden treasure of world film. Omohide Poro Poro, Gonshu the Cellist, Horus Prince of the Sun, My Neighbours the Yamadas -- every one of them beautiful movies.

I should warn you -- he's a Fourierist.
