This game frustrates the hell out of me!

I never had an N64 back when it was a current system, so I never played this game when it was new. I tried playing it years later, but couldn't deal with the lousy controls.

Lately I've been playing it using an emulator bundle that supports mouse and keyboard control, making it control like a standard computer FPS game. Some people say that mouse control makes the game too easy, but while one level might be easy, the next one makes up for it by being a royal pain in the ass!

I absolutely fvcking HATE timed levels and so far this game has had two of them. The one in the silo was bad enough but now I'm supposed to figure out which way to go on city streets, driving a tank while getting shot to death by dozens of soldiers. "Oh, the tank makes you super-tough so you can take a lot of damage!" Bullsh!t! Maybe I survive a little longer in the tank, but my health still drops like the temperature at the south pole every time I get shot.

Naturally, they included guys with rocket launchers who deplete your health in nothing flat. I guess you're supposed to use the tank's cannon to shoot them, but you can't even see them until they start firing at you and then there's no way to avoid the rockets. Not that shooting them with the cannon is a practical solution, since aiming it is useless and actually hitting anything is mostly a matter of dumb luck. Plus they put frigging mines in the road.

It might help if I had some idea which way I'm supposed to go, but as far as I can see, there's nothing to indicate the correct direction. I could just look at a walkthrough, but I'm trying to complete the game without any outside help. I always resort to reading a walkthough and it always feels like cheating. I'm always disappointed after that I needed help to get through the game and couldn't figure it out for myself.

I like the idea of the game and technically it's quite impressive for the time and the system, but some of the levels make me want to put my fist through the screen! 

Lol, relax and watch a walk through on YouTube. Be greatful you can do that now, as it didn't exist back in the day I used to play this.

Imo, the game designers did an excellent job attuning the game to the N64 controller, and that's the absolute best thing to play it with. I play it on my laptop without one, but it's more frustrating and really not fun.

I've tried playing it with the N64 controller and gave up on the first level. I can't deal with using a thumbstick for aiming. And before you ask, I have the exact same problem on all console FPS games, which is why I've never played any of them.

That's also why I started playing Goldeneye using the mouse mod. It lets you play the game like it's a computer FPS game, with full mouselook. About the only difference is that there's no crosshair until you press the right mouse button to activate aiming mode. There's even a way around that using an external program to put a crosshair in the center of the screen.

If you want to check it out for yourself, you can get the mod here;

Just unpack the archive to wherever you want and double-click one of the EXE files. After setting the options, press the '4' key to enable the mouse in the game. Note: You'll have to supply your own ROMs for Goldeneye and Perfect Dark, but they're not hard to find.

I played a little further after posting my original message. I left off on a level where you have to protect Natalia from a never-ending stream of guards while she hacks a computer. I do great until I start running low on ammo and then she gets killed while I'm running to the side to grab the guns from all the dead guards.

That's always been the most frustrating mission for me. Having to start all over again when she dies is a real bringdown 

Using an emulator I can use save states to just replay that part.

Unfortunately, I was quicksaving after killing each enemy and I quicksaved without realizing that she'd just been shot! Which means that I have to start the entire level over from the beginning. That was 2-3 weeks ago and I haven't gone back to it yet.
