When is the DVD coming out!

This is a great documentary on one of Hollywood's greatest movie studios and deserves to be out in a deluxe DVD set.

reply

I agree. I'll be the first one to buy the DVD. But when?

reply

Maybe someone should write to Turner Classic Movies. Maybe they would know. You don't suppose someone has forgotten about this wonderful documentary when it comes to transferring to DVD?

Warner Bros. who owns the film says it's prepare for DVD reproduction, but wants to wait until the right time to release. I guess it's going to be when they release a lot of older classics to tie it in.

reply

Oh my gosh I hope they do it soon! I enjoyed this documentary ever since I was 12 years old, and I just the whole thing a few days ago. I hadn't seen it in over 10 years and now that I'm an adult, I can see the sincerity in it and with a bit of sorrow, I have to admit that there will never be anything like that again. This has been the best documentary production I've ever seen, well paced, well informed and colorful with Patrick Steward as the host. I BEG them to release it soon. I taped it a long time ago when it first aired on TNT however the quality has deteriorated over the years plus it's filled with commercials. The minute you hear of it's release date, please post and let us know!

Will Do!

WB said it's been ready yo go, but they want to release it as promotion. In 2007, they will be releasing some classic movies that were never released on vhs or dvd like caged (1950) and queen from outer space, and others. i'm guessing this would be the kind of promotion they would want to package when the lion roars with.

I saw this Mini Series and I absolutely loved it! Hope the DVD comes out real soon!!!

reply

Has it actually been confirmed a DVD will be released, if so, when? This was a superb documentary and I'd love to upgrade my old tape recorded from TV.

reply

Not as of yet...Warners confirmed that they will have a campaign designed to celebrate M-G-M classics when the release of this amazing documentary is coming.

reply

Time Warner management is currently trying to keep their jobs amid much discontent on the part of large shareholders in the company. The chances any executive there will greenlight mastering a long (3 DVD)documentary like "When The Lion Roars" for DVD in the near future are slim. TCM's GM just walked the plank, giving up a job he had for almost 12 years for, he said, new career opportunities. Yeah, right. The new boss of the Turner cable stations is looking to maximize revenue, so ads on TCM may be in soon between movies while niche market DVDs are put on the backburner.

reply

Great. Just great. :(

Thanks for the insight. I've been wondering what the hell is going on at Warner Bros, because the quality (and quantity!) of their classic movie DVD releases has been declining lately.

TCM is also definitely going to the dogs. More modern movies (1970s-2000s) crowding out obscure classics that need and deserve more airtime. The promos/ads are becoming obnoxious/trashy/disrespecting the classics (have you seen the ad where dogs start howling to Jeanette MacDonald's singing?! Unbelievably rude. Another attempt to attract "hip young viewers" I suppose)

It really sucks that we can't count on PROMISES that Warner made to their loyal customers a few years ago (such as the eventual release of "When The Lion Roars") I can't begin to express my anger and disappointment.

Here is a link through TCM where you can vote to have this film been given the respect it deserves.

It would be great, if they would release it on DVD as one great package, but also release each part singularly, and then include a bonus disc with one of the films documented in that part. For instance, Part 1 includes the film 'Greed', Part 2 includes 'Broadway Melody of 1940' and so on. may also do an MGM 'Night At The Movies' as Warner has done for a lot of their clssic DVD releases to include a cartoon, Shorts and Newsreels.

Warner are releasing MGM: When The Lion Roars on DVD May 13, 2008 as part of a Frank Sinatra/Gene Kelly DVD Box Set.

reply

Is it available only in the box set? Are the Sinatra/Kelly movies the same dvds out now or did they add any extra features.

reply

I recently read the description of the Sinatra/Kelly box set and it states that only an excerpt of "When the Lion Roared" will be included, not the entire documentary.

I taped the documentary off of TNT way back in the day when it was first broadcast and usually watch at least part of it once or twice a year. I second what everyone above has said. It is a wonderful film that needs to be released in its entirety on DVD. Lots of folks appear who are no longer with us: Helen Hayes, Freddie Bartholomew, Howard Keel, June Allyson, and on and on.

reply

Yeah, why should Warner release the entire documentary when they can just chop it up and dole it out gradually as countless excerpts used as bonus features for MGM films, thus forcing fans to buy more DVDs in order to see the docu a little at a time? Warner probably thinks they'll make more money that way.

And why should they promote MGM's legacy anyway? Warner and MGM were in competition back in the day, and now that WB owns most of MGM's catalogue, it's in their best interest to suppress the competition, right? When they're not attempting to rewrite history by releasing MGM's biggest hits with a very prominent WB logo on the DVD cover art so that casual fans/ignorant new generation/lazy people who don't do the research, will assume these were Warner titles all along. You can't convince me that doesn't have something to do with their failure to release "MGM: When The Lion Roars".

Oh but I'm just thrilled to hear that WB are going to be celebrating their 85th anniversary this year with a brand new documentary called "You Must Remember This", promoting their *own* film history.

Bah.

reply

This year is Warner's big 85th anniversary and they are celebrating. Next year is MGM's 85th anniversary so maybe next year we will see it on DVD? As someone mentioned Warner Brothers is waiting for the right moment to release it with a huge MGM campaign. It just might be next year!

reply

There's some kind of legal issue apparently holding it out, so it might NEVER get released on DVD :(

reply

You're wrong.

Our office is in fact working on the subtitles of the DVD as we speak. It will be released.

reply

Really! Any idea when it will be out?

reply

Just found out today that Warner will be releasing the DVD for this terrific documentary on January 20, 2009!

reply

Great news!!!

Thanks for the update. :o)

reply

it's also included with the 70th anniversary edition of 'Wizard of Oz' on dvd and blu-ray

reply

It has been included with the Ultimate Collector's Edition of 'Gone with the Wind' but only on the Blu-ray edition.
It's a "flipper" (single dual-sided) DVD
