Honest question, I'm not a perve, but do the girls fall in love?

One of the reviews said it wasn't a lesbian anime but in everything I've read it's said otherwise. Do they fall in love or what? I'm already planning on buying the DVDs, but I'm curious.

I watched a music video with clips of the show, and there's one of them kissing so...how does that leave any room for doubt? Just wondering.

Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm, interesting....I managed to see the first or second episode and I thought it was one of the cutest/best things I've seen in a while. It just made me smile, so I will definitely be getting the series....somehow...

I think you must not take Utena on the first degree : strange or insane characters fighting to go out with Anthy. It's all images of the fights you have to overcome to become an adult. The way for Utena to become an adult is to be a Prince, so she needs a Princess. The way for Nanami to become adult is to live by herself, not for her brother. The way for Saionji to become an adult is to see the mimits of his friendship with Touga. The way for Jury to become an adult is to get over her feeelings for <forgot her name>. All the series being an allegory of the passage from teenager to adult, sometimes things are hazy because your perception of things at this period changes from day to day. That's why too there are some hilarious episodes, because you need to just give away to a good laugh to release the tension. It's really psychologically interesting.

I guess the relationship Utena & Anthy have,in some way,is based on dependency but in the end in turns into something different.Maybe not love or sex,but something pure.

If you follow there relationship from the beginning,to the arrival of Akio,to the move into the tower, and the end itself, your notice a change from Anthy being a slave to finally having freewill. Also a change in Utena.Simplily put:Utena is a ignorant child. At first she was only playing the role of the Prince, not doing what all real Princes do:save the princess(or in this case Anthy). It's not until later after some shocking revelations does she finally becomes the prince.

Thats the great thing about the series:it has so many layers, you can watch it a hundred times and still discover something new(I think since 1998,I've watched Utena start to finish about 20 times).

While some find the Movie different,I think it's still one of the most moving and beautiful Animated Movies out there.

U know i was looking for comments for the movie, but was refreshing reading some comments on the series, and wanted to point that hmmmmm well somewhere i read that on otori high school doesnt seems to be a regular time space, coz there is many characters that are said to be there for many years (forgot names xD) and they havent aged much or nothing at all.

On the lesbian or not issue , is whatever u like but as far as it distribution or /rate/genre on japan, is not yaoi, on the other hand dont u think watchin two cute girls kissing is very hot ? ;) ; i go for the non homosexual relation though.

And totally agree on that all characteres are goin through their way out from teens to adults dealing with their conflicts, very psycological interesting.

On a side note i should remark i never found out or have an opinion for that obsession of Miki with time or what he was timing.

reply

It's commonly theorized that Miki is timing Touga's speeches.

And I, for one, definitely believe that Anthy and Utena are in love. Yes, it is made ambiguous, but there are several references from the directors that indicate that they are, in fact, lesbians. However, on a stark contrast from the rest of the relationships in the series, there is no sexual interaction shown between the characters. Thus symbolizing the purity of the relationship.

The minute you start pointing fingers, somebody's going to get poked.

reply

If you want them to be raging hardcore lesbians, they can be.

Oh, Fonty, you have such a way with words, you do!

Anthy and Utena are not in love in the television series. There is much ambiguity about their relationship, but it's explicitly stated numerous times that they're very good friends. The relationship that Utena has with other characters in later episodes makes it more clear that there probably isn't a sexual/romantic relationship between Anthy and Utena.

reply

The sexual orientation of nearly every single character is ambiguous and seems to be contingent on plot requirements of the moment. With the possible exception of Juri sexual orientation is not really the point. In the end it is not about sex but love and friendship.
