Richard Gere Should Not Have Been Dr. T

I know I will probably get blasted for saying this but, here goes: I think the role of Dr. T. should have gone to LESLIE NIELSEN instead of Richard Gere. Nielsen was a better dramatic actor, A LOT funnier, and much better looking. He was more distinguished looking with his white hair, and thus, would have been more realistic in that part.

Robert Altman was very open to letting his performers ad-lib. Nielsen was a maestro at that art form. The first scene in the movie would have been VASTLY different if Nielsen had been the one doing the exam on that woman.

The guy from Naked Gun? Too old. Too silly. Richard Gear is better looking.

Did you ever see "Nuts"? Leslie Neilson is no longer with us, but you can't compare his one performance in "Naked Gun", he was quite versatile.

He was a dramatic actor as well as comical, I never thought much of Gere as an actor.

reply

I never thought much of Richard Gere as an actor either, but he was just right for this role.

100 Leslie Nielsons could not have saved this turkey.

This change would have called for a rewrite. The movie portrayed women as being idiots who were practically trembling in ecstasy at the touch of their gynecologist. This dumb idea wouldn't work with Nielsen.
