You have to be british to appreciate the film.

i really think you wont 'get' the film as much if your not british or partularly english. its just about modern british teenagers and teenagers in germany and america are totally different and i cant see you relating to the characters as much. i'd like to hear from all different countries.

reply

agreed u hav 2 understand about all the 'britishness' in it

reply

haha its sooo funny. its part of us british people and thats the best part.

reply

yeah, what a pity to hear all of these critics to the film, like it is misoginous or bad taste or disgusting in general. they simply don't have the enogh sense of humour. i haven't laughed so hard in my entire life... i am chilean, and you don't have to be british, you just have to 'get it'.

reply

I don't agree.
I'm dutch and I love that english humour.

I laughed my ass off :D hehe

this movie is absolutely great!
And than, Rhys Ifans is amazing.

"I'm a stranger to you. You have no idea what I am capable of."

reply

american critics dont like the film because its not dumbed-down slapstick comedy, they dont understand anything else

reply

And what is it?

...yeah we prefer movies like 40 year old virgin, guess your slap stick comedy theory doesn't hold anymore.

reply

Im swedish, and im proud to say that the brits deliver the best comedy avavible. Monthy pythons, little britain, black adder, mr bean. And it dosnt end there. Every time a brit comedian is trying to be funny he is. Its wonderful. Just remember, that noone expects the spanish inquisistion

reply

You think this is an intelligent comedy, the Office is a great example of British humour, not this piece of hogwash, anyone that likes it has a terrible sense of humour. If its funny, its international, if its not you can say wow I know them because they're where I'm from.

reply

I disagree,Im Canadian and i HATE british humour like monty python, keeping up appearances,Extra's, Mr. Bean....pretty much anything british i dont like EXCEPT for this movie,i thought it was soooo funny

reply

I'm Texan and I love this movie, although it helps that I'm an ex-patriot but still.

Oh shut up you ignorant xenophobic twat.

Haven't seen this movie jet, but my english friend recommended it to me. I'm swedish, and I have to say that british and swedish humour are the best.

But I also have to say that american comedy also can be funny. There are some classics like Dumb, Dumber, Ace venture 1&2 und zo weiter. (ups jim carrey in all of them)

reply

the title is wrong. anyone can appreciate this film as long as they are not american. the only foreign films they can laugh at have to have hugh grant being gormless in. they prefer anything to do with a prom night and a pact.

reply

i disagree, im english and i think this film is complete s**te

I love this movie. I saw it back in 2001 when I was 16 with all my friends and we loved it. I'm Australian, my British roots go right back. I hate the (popular in America) American version of The Office, especially after watching the original British one. It just made me angry that they copied it.

Words. Nothing but sweet, sweet words that turn into bitter orange wax in my ears.

reply

Haha you're abviously American Fred considering you said they were in Germany

reply

why do you have to be brittish to like a movie where one 15yo is played by a 40yo man and the other by a 30 something woman?

reply

I'm american and I loved this movie. Although there was quite a bit of british insults and teen-age slang that I did not understand, I found the movie absolutely entertaining. AND THE MUSIC WAS BANGING !!!

reply

God I would hate to think that other countries thought all our teenagers were really like that. It may have been amusing if you were pre-pubescent, have a low IQ or are a chav who lives in social housing but this isn't particularly symbolic of British humour. It was one joke stretched into over an hour of film, the sketches on Harry Enfield's show were fivr mins and he could get away with it but this was unfunny

reply

[deleted]

I wouldn't say you HAVE to be British but it certainly helps, not only because of the humour within but also because as a Brit there is more chance you will have seem Harry Enfield & Chums on TV and so will already be familiar with the characters.

reply

I think being British would help for most. As an American I saw while in England for a while and cried laughing. what drew me to tears? Perry asking for a jam sandwich. Kevins bodily outline in the bushes(where he runs away). the saying on Perrys' shirt at the begining of the movie which I can't remember now - I haven't seen it in 2 years. the over all crush Perry has on Kevins mom. (catching Kevins parents in Ibiza on the couch and remarking that she was cheeky)

but the best had to be - the eggs handed out.

reply

kevins t shirt says "individual"

perrys says "individual too"

I think it helps if you're accustomed to English humour from before. I am a Norwegian, and I have always liked Monty Python and Rik & Ade, for example. This film appeals to me as it reminds me of people I knew who really were that desperate when me and my friends were at the same age. I also like it because of the music, because of Rhys Ifans and because me and my friends have a tradition of watching it every summer.

reply

Im English! Film was rinsin! 4.5!?!?!? You can eat my piss gov!

Trying is the first step towards failure.
IS IT REARLY!?!?
Yes.

reply

i love this movie but i don't like the monty python movies, i think kevin is harmless even when aroused. i mean a nearly naked girl was sleepign next to him and all he did was lie there and he never tried it on with her or anything, i thought that was nice of him, she was lucky that all he did was tell his friend he slept with her cause someone else coul;d of easily done it with her being so drunk. i don't like 2 disgusting bits but the rest is hilarious

"sir, sir, i gotta check and see if you've soiled yourself" Peter Griffin - Family Guy

reply

No. You have to be British and of a lower denomination of being. It is a bad film. Harry Enfield's worst work and jam-packed full of clichés that go too far to be funny. If anyone American or foreign were to read this thread, they will see our once-credible humour as complete toss and go about their day. Sadly, this post is too far down and now we look like a nation of unfunny imbeciles.

Thank god we have Ricky Gervais, Peter Kay and Steve Coogan's Alan Partridge.

reply

You would prefere 'The Good Life' .....?

Trying is the first step towards failure.
IS IT REARLY!?!?
Yes.

reply

British humour is pretty diverse. Just like a 70s Jag is very different from a 70's Aston Martin but they're both excellent and they're both very... british. The Good Life is great, but so is the Young Ones where Vyvyan goes "I HATE THE GOOD LIFE IT'S SO BLOODY NICE!" but there you are then.

The Office is brilliant but in a very different way to The Vicar of Dibley.

Only Fools and Horses is very different to Open All Hours which itself has a similar feel to Last of the Summer Wine and Only Fools and Horses is abit like Minder or The Sweeney but those are more extreme. The other side of the coin can be seen in the Royle Family or even Bottom for the Hammersmith of London feel, though it's a different place to peckham.

Every good British Comedy has a british style about it, which is what makes the comedy british... and therefore Kevin and Perry Go Large is just as good a canditate for being British as the Carry On films.

reply

One difference the carry On Films were funny, Kevin and Perry was just a joke

reply

The carry on filsnm wernt that good. It was like.. OMG shes naked AHAHAHAAH.....

Trying is the first step towards failure.
IS IT REARLY!?!?
Yes.

reply

In the context of this film they were hilarious

I don't think was meant to be an "intelligent" comedy as someone else pointed out earlier on - I would fathom it was intended to be, crude, offbeat and demonstrative of teen culture in the UK at the time, bearing in mind that was when dance/club music was dominant in the UK - people start drinking, clubbing, and "doing it" much earlier in this day and age

reply

I am British, and I didn't appreciate this pile of utter crap one bit. Rated it a 1.

reply

It does help being British to understand this film in every aspect, obviously american critics dont like it, they probably think Yugoslavia starts with a U. People shouldnt take this film seriously, its only meant to be a bit of fun. On British comedy, The Fast Show and Red Dwarf are my favourites, CLASSICS!
