not anti communist

This book and movie was not anti communist. George Orwell the author was a communist until the day he died. He fought in the Spanish Civil War for the communist side and was shot in the neck. The book/movie is anti Stalin. Stalin represented communism the way George Bush represents democracy, they are leaders of the government but do not rule by its rules. Snowball represents Trotsky, a communist party leader who was kicked out of Russia and hunted down by a paranoid Stalin. Orwell was a Trotsky supporter. I know this is not how people teach it in history class and english but it is the facts.

Glad somebody else saw that. if anything this films show that communism is a good thing (on paper, not practice).

No involuntary government is a good thing. Communism is nothing but a social contract, you can't impose your beliefs on someone else and you can't forcefuly take someone's property away from them.

I wonder, what will you do once your boogeyman (GWB) leaves office. Who will you demonize and blame for all your problems then?

reply

Maybe blame will be assigned to those that are to blame. Cause in point the Boogeyman (GWB) is blamed for a lot of what is wrong with America because...he has been in charge of it for the last 7 years. His policies have lead to where we are as a nation today.

I say we take off and nuke the entire site from orbit. It's the only way to be sure.

"His policies have lead to where we are as a nation today."

Perhaps you can show a little cause-and-effect? Give some evidence by pointing out a specific policy and then show how it had negative consequences. Otherwise you are just spouting baseless accusations. Or, worse yet, just repeating what you have heard other people say but haven't really verified anything for yourself.

reply

I will only have to point to 2 polices, since I could care less to point out more;

Economy- while supporting hands off approach to regulation of business and industry oversight and while trying to allow the markets to function in a free moving while, all the while knowing that an eventual downturn would pop the housing bubble and lending markets. In Heinz Sight, the Fed could have stepped in at anytime and squashed the predatory lending and adjusted rates to allow for controlled growth.

Iraq- because while venturing into a baseless unneeded war, invading a sovereign nation (although lead by a violent fascist madman) he has lead the military to its lowest state of readiness since Vietnam. Turned a trillion dollar budget excess into the largest deficit in history and the by partnering this with the substantiated Global War on Terror, has taken his eyes off of the true target, Osama Bin Laden.

Cause and Effect are easy, when you are the President, you are held accountable for the actions of the federal government while on your watch. Bear in mind that posted that comment in MAR 08.

I say we take off and nuke the entire site from orbit. It's the only way to be sure.

Looks like Orwell was prophetic. Nearly 18 months after your post, they're still using W as a bogeyman.

He wasn't a communist. He was probably the most vocal supporter of democracy in the country. Not sure how you could have missed this fact.

"Every line of serious work that I have written since 1936 has been written, directly or indirectly, against totalitarianism and for democratic socialism, as I understand it,"- George Orwell

Have you actually read any of his journalism? You don't have to look very far to find him criticising communism.

reply

are u saying, that orwell stateing that he is against facism in turn is against communism? when .0005 seconds later he says he <3's democratic socialism.

reply

Orwell was a socialist not a communist, although he was sympathetic to the communist ideals he was anti soviet union because of the totalitarian nature of Stalin. In Animal Farm Old Major is clearly Lenin and Snowball is obviously Trotsky and neither is represented badly. The book is actually anti revolution if it is conducted in secrecy and that any revolution is only worth the effort if the masses are fully aware of everything that is going on and know to chuck out the new leaders when they have served their purpose so that they don't become like the oppressive powers they replaced.

reply

hahaha ok that quote kills your entire point...

reply

Orwell was a socialist, not a communist.

And, whether intentionally or not, his novels (Animal Farm and 1984) exposed the horrors of the Soviet Union and left-wing totalitarianism in general.

If you look at the political climate of the present day, it is the Left who are pushing for "thought crimes" and "newspeak" and other such Orwellian concepts.

reply

Orwell was NOT a communist. He might have admired some communist ideas early in his life, but the old Soviet era communism completely disillusioned him with communism. He was/became a "democratic socialist." He was completely against any form of totalarianism. And Animal Farm shows how communism simply degenerates into something worse that what it replaces.

reply

He at one point believed communism was a good idea, but he had seen how it failed, and switched. That is why he wrote animal farm.

Hey baby, want to go black and make a difficult decision regarding whether or not to go back?

reply

George Orwell was a socialist , not a communist (yes, there is a difference) he was very critical of communism and totaltarianism although he was a socialist.

THANK YOU
I was wondering when someone would point this out. For too long has this book been buried under a Himalaya's worth of reactionary and nonsensical commentary about this book representing the dangers of revolutionary thinking. Orwell needs to be reclaimed from the Eustonites and Hitchensians.

The Bush haters blamed him for everything ! Where are they now that Obama is into his second term ?
They drink the Obama Kool-Aid because Squealer is an Obama supporter. The sheep were told to hate Bush..so they did, then told how smart Obama is...and they believe that as well.
