What did they do?

I know that it doesn't really matter that we never find out what it was they met to do... and that's cool, but...what do you think it was?

reply

hahaifait !!! the first question that came into my mind after seeing this movie the same that after all wat was it? wat was their FANTACY? remember she says to the interviewer that now her fantacy doesnt matter anymore.... y did she say that? any clue???? atleast i have no idea....

reply

I think the point was that it didn't matter what it was, but it was considered kind of weird by most folks and made them happy. It's how they found each other.

Since they didn't carry a lot of special equipment with them, I'm thinking it wasn't S&M...so, foot fetish? Golden Showers? Rape Fantasy? It's anybody's guess.

reply

I don’t even think the screenplay writer knew what it was.

reply

I agree, there's not any one concrete thing that the screenplay writer could come up with that would have the approtiate effect on the audience. There is no spoon :-)

a piggyback fetish? abhorrent!

reply

Maybe I'm wrong but I could have sworn that when they are at the café before the mystery fantasy comes to fruition, she drops something into her tea that appeared at least to me to be a pill. Doesn't she also make a comment about a ruphee as well, which in my mind suggests it was a rape fantasy

I think you are right on, PaulSterrett. I noticed pretty much everything you did too. I would like to add that "Sergi" said that doing it "normally" was too "emotional" or something to that effect. I can't remember the exact wording but it is clear, during the movie, that he has relationship issues. When asked by "Natalie", I remember him saying that he had never professed his love to anyone for fear of rejection, which arguably passed over to his "sexual" life as well. Having sex in the "non-normal" way could be a way at distancing himself from the emotional connection that is generally felt during sex. The fantasy had to do with something that was "removed" all together from what is interpreted as "normal" sexual contact, as you suggested (in other words).

"Arrange for me this splendid insecurity." Bukowski to his love.

the horse riding thing makes sense, i was thinking something about role invertion (i don't know if this is the expression in english), something like she being the top in the relation...wait, that's MY phantasy with Sergi Lopez

Well, here's what I think...

She said her thighs were sore, he said the small of his back ached. When they first met, she made a comment about his height--

Intercourse standing up? Against a wall? She's hanging on with her thighs, he's hurting his back holding her up (LOL) and she was a tiny bit concerned that he wouldn't be strong/tall enough to do it?

It certainly isn't "the normal way" and while I wouldn't consider it "sick", I might consider it to be somewhat rough and impersonal.

Thoughts?

I think the whole point is to make the viewer think about it. That is what made it such a great film. Thank god it was not made first in the US-it would be horrible-everything would be so overt.

I support XCHRIS' point: it's about unconditional sex with a stranger - that's why they don't even know each others names, let alone where they live. It's HER phantasy (she posted the ad), and it's HER who keeps up the formalities, though he wants to find out more about her. Before the third meet in the hotel she talks about being sick of the missionaire's position and she wants to be 'on top'. Now THAT seems a weird thing to discuss, if you were into abnormal sex practices ...

Another question: he says right at the beginning that he answered to her magazine-ad by letter, she talks of e-mail or chat room. It could be logical in that he wrote to the (anonymous) ad-address, giving contact details, and she got in touch by internet. It could also hint at some hidden flaws in the story, that the whole thing is made up. Why would both of them be talking to a therapist (or interviewer??) at presumably the same time? On the other hand, you can clearly see that time has passed, they look totally changed, and that they live different lives now.
