Wasn't there a fourth? NEED HELP

I understand that there are many Mario games out there.. Either the ones only available in Japan and the ones we all know about. I also know Mario has had cameos in endless games.. But bear with me on this..

I remember playing a game at my cousin's place when I was young.. Early nineties I would say. I think it was pirated copied (or you know the ones you had to attach the two bricks together and stuff it in the console), which probably means it was only available in Japan.

You played as MARIO. In 2D. There were well thought out levels and a very entertaining game.. Just like the others.. I can barely remember that something was off with the colors. It was all red-like or something. And I think you could transform into things at certain points.. Anyway, (I'm just pointing out things I vaguely remember) At the end of each level, there was a bunch of barrels or something, that were protected by a little monster or something..

Please help me find out what game this is!!

I would be forever grateful =)

I realize this is coming late in the game, but seeing as no one has responded to your post, I'll try to take a crack at it. For starters, I'm going to admit that I'm really not sure what game you're talking about. The information you give is too vague and could have come from just about any Mario game. You say that in the game you transform into things at certain points. In Super Mario Bros. 3 you could obtain a number of costumes for Mario to wear. You could get a leaf that gave Mario raccoon ears and a tail and allowed him to fly after getting a running start. There are other, somewhat more elaborate costumes in the game. These costumes, to my knowledge, include the Tanooki Suit, the Frog Suit, and the Hammer Bros. Suit. The Tanooki Suit is very much like the leaf (Tanooki, or Tanuki, is actually a Japanese animal like a raccoon) except it covers Mario's entire body in fur and the only difference between it and the leaf is that if you press down and B, you will become an invincible statue for a few seconds. The Frog Suit turns Mario into a frog-like creature and allows him to swim better. The Hammer Bros. Suit dresses Mario like a Hammer Brother (a turtle-like creature) and allows him to throw hammers. Of course, power-ups like this exist in many of the Mario games, such as Super Mario World and Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island.

Now, you also say that at the end of each level is a bunch of barrels or something. The only Mario game with barrels that I can think of is the original Donkey Kong, but I doubt that the game you're describing is that one, because you say Mario can transform into things at certain points, and the only power-ups that I recall in DK was the mallet that you could grab to break barrels with. You say that the "barrels" or whatever they were, were protected by a monster or something. Having a monster at the end of the level is not only very common in Mario games, it's also a very common convention in video games in general.

Have you played any other Mario games before? Is there any more information you can provide about this game? Perhaps this web site will help you: www.classicgaming.com/tmk. It has a great deal of information about the Mario games. Sorry I couldn't pinpoint what specific game you were talking about. Hope the web site helps you.

This one sounds like a pirate game or a hack. I've played all of the 2-D Mario games, but I've never heard of one like that.

I think what you are talking about is a hack.Because my friend has a bunch of NES games for an NES Emulator. One of them is called Super Mario Bros 4.So I try it out and you play as Mario at first jumping on rats. You can also transform into diffrent animals like a duck. But later on I found out this was a hack when I played the Tiny Toon Adventures game for NES.I found out I was all along playing Tiny Toon Adventures only the hack made it have Mario play as the rabbit.

There was some kind of Mario game for the short-lived now forgotten Virtual Boy system. I remember playing it at blockbuster and it sounds like what you describe. The VB was all red/black colors by the way.

It can be found here

Its called Tiny Mario Adventures. You need an NES emulator. While youre there, you can get the original Tiny Toon Adventures game.

Ok, turned out it wasn't that tiny toons game.. hehe.. but thanks for your efford in trying to help me.

I checked out the rom site you listed, and even though I didn't try out the billion super mario games on there, I'm pretty sure it isn't listed.

Because all of the games there is a hack of previous SMB games ( [smb1 hack] ) file extensions etc.. I'm pretty sure the game I played as a kid wasnt a copy of any of them, because of it's unique gameplay and graphics..

Guess I'm never going to relive my childhood through the beauty of that game..... :(

I found out what game it was about a year ago. It's from Japan and is called Armadillo (NES)
The version I played as a kid included a hacked Mario as it's protagonist. Great game though, I recommend it strongly to any old school gamer. :)
