Ugh

Did anyone else find the Olivia Newton-John character insufferable? I wanted to reach through the screen and smack her gum-chomping, overacting face.

Other than her completely useless character, I thought this movie was hilarious and self-aware.

well, the character really had nothing to do in the movie, other than being part of Mama's wild past, so I think she was trying to make her character so over the top that she would be memorable. I love OLJ though, so couldn't really say I had the same reaction that you did. Now, the security guard really annoyed me, I could totally see him sitting in a Southern Baptist church laughing about how he tormented an elderly patient where he worked.

reply

You gotta be kiddin' me! Olivia's character was over the top? Except for Ty, every character in this movie was over the top! That is what made it so funny.

reply

Really? I thought Ty was a little over the top. Many of the southern women were dead on. I saw a little bit of my mom and aunts in those women.

reply

Ty REALLY got on my nerves... TERRIBLE actor....His lover was hot though, the one in the series anyway...I can't remember if their the same or not....

reply

Ty didn't have a lover in the movie.

Ignore the trolls! Any failure to do so will only grant them the satisfaction they seek!

reply

I agree with you that all the characters are "over-the-top." But just to clarify, it wasn't that Olivia's character was over the top that got on my nerves, it was that she was just really irritating and appeared to be trying way too hard. It just seemed to come naturally for all the other actors.

she seemed pointless

"I saw a little bit of my mom and aunts in those women."

That's why I love it so much.

Good luck.

reply

Stop hating on Olivia! She's the main reason i wanted to see this movie, and she was terrific in it. I love her. I honestly love her.

reply

She has a much bigger role in the series. Having watched the series first, then the movie, I was surprised at how little screen time and story she gets in the movie, considering they've written a whole storyline and backstory for her on the show. In the movie, you don't really know anything about her. She sings some songs and that's about it. But her role is much more developed on the TV series.

In a satire, the characters are supposed to be over-the-top. She was DIRECTED that way.

She didn't bother me in the movie that much, but in the series...worst accent ever. Why bother even trying a Texas accent when it was clearly laced with so much of her australian accent. Horrible. I liked her character, I just had to get around that accent.
