First off, what year did all this take place. Also, was the female sheriff in the film a real person? If so what is her real name. I really liked her character. This was an interesting movie. But it seemed as though it took place in more recent times.

shareThe film took place in the mid 1950s (51 I think?) but the film is not a period piece. Steve Balderson's movies all have that dicotomy with past styles (primarily throwbacks to the 50s and 60s) combined with modern and surreal styles. "Pep Squad" was like that as well.
I'm not sure what the sheriff's real name is - but she was a real person, yes. If you contact the Wamego Public Library they have several files on the real crime and more info. Hope this helps!
The documentary that comes as an extra on the Firecracker DVD mentions her name and current position (she works as a judge nowadays, as far as I understood). Supposedly the director talked to her in preparation of the film.
