The movie is frightening, I'm surprised by all the scorn

It's not a great movie but it has many frightening scenes. The creepy church with the demonic room below, the possessed woman's makeup and her chasing the boy through the catacombs in the dark. Not to mention the absolutely awful Nazi flashback.. though that's more emotional anguish than just terror. I will never understand why this movie was panned so hard, there was some great elements of horror within it.
