Is it just me or...

...does this movie sound off the BS alarm really loud? Like why arent any of the 'soldiers' taking responsibility for anything they did? Why are they blaming the government for everything?!? The whole movie feels like some sick joke, like dont any of you know any history at all? Biggest pile of propaganda crap I have ever seen. Dont belive anything you hear in this movie!!

reply

Its just you. Why bother writing crap like that. There always has to be some fool that goes against facts. Why is it so hard for you to accept as fact that these incidents really did happen? What, you think every single soldier abided by the Geneva Convention? These are honest soliders ashamed of what they did. Tell me what did they have to gain by telling lies?!? You would rather believe the Nixon govt that what they told was all facts? Why dont you go to Iraq now and tell me if any soldiers there have not committed any atrocites! Thank God for documentaries like this. Thank God you are a minority.

reply

What did they have to gain by lying? Well...you probably remember John Kerry? This was the jump board for his political career. You should definatly read up on some history on the Vietnam conflict. I did, I use to think like you....well youre wrong. It's sad that ppl like you tend to be the majority.

reply

Ok then, you are saying that the Vietnam war was a clean war? You dont think one soldier went out of line? Not even a soldier that was stoned and pyscho, pumped full of adrenalin? I dont know what history you read up on. For another more shocking account why dont you read "Tiger Force" by Pulitzer-prize winners Michael Sallah and Mitch Weiss. Even more proof that an elite recon unit called Tiger Force commited even worse atrocities and constantly mutiliated bodies. I dont know how you cany deny that stuff like this never occured. Really, what does John Kerry have to do with this? He was an aspiring politician at the time, and how could someone that wanted to get into politics not be involved with Vietnam in that period of time? He was only in the film for 30 seconds anyway. Come on dude, you should know how the military works by now - they will cover up anything that is not in their best interests. The military wall of silence. It just took courage for these soldiers to break down that wall of silence

reply

Oh, please - you really think John Kerry, among all the others of his generation, got back from the *beep* that was Nam and decided, 'That's it, I'm going to run for President in twenty years time...'?
People should consider that those best disposed to tell the truth about Vietnam are those who were there - and it wasn't all heroics and beer, no matter how the Vets may get all moisty eyed about Xmas cookies in the DMZ.
The truth is too often regarded as an inconveninece by those who would seek to remould history to suit their contemporary agenda - and let's face an uncomfortable truth here, the Vietnam conflict was not a high point in the recent history of the USA.
And, yes, you've walked blindly into a similar situation in iraq.
And THAT is what makes you uncomfortable.

It's just you.

I suppose some of the "Winter Soldiers" were providing truthful info to the committee, but too many of those testifying to the "crimes" they claimed to have committed in Viet Nam have since been revealed for the fakes they were.

Read "Stolen Valor".. The author names names.

As for the UK posters here who love to believe anything evil they hear or read about the United States, you can shove it. You don't know anymore about the American experience in Vietnam than you do about brushing your teeth.

reply

Yeah, you seem like you know more than the average person. Funny guy.

I was a US Marine for four of the longest years of my life, and I was riveted by this film. Many of the things you heard about the Marines -- from boot camp to dehumanization of the enemy -- is dead on the money. If you don't believe that these things really happened in Vietnam, then it's true what they say: there are none so blind as those who refuse to see.

reply

I must say this documentary is very powerful in a sense that veterans of the Vietnam War told their stories of commiting atrocious violence upon the Vietnamese however these particular circumstances are not uncommon, there are many countries that went through the same ordeal, for example the Nanking massacre commited by the Imperial Japanese forces and the Armenian genocide during the great war. It takes alot of courage and bravery to let the public know the U.S. soldiers commited these atrocities during the Vietnam War therefore I am not ashamed of being a U.S. citizen because we have enough courage to admit our mistakes and how we constructively criticize against our government on the moral principle of war. I'm actually proud to be an American because we have the freedom to determine what is right or wrong.

reply

Uh, no. Right after the investigation newspapers found more witnesses who could corroborate the evidence.

You're just making sh*t up. If you keep saying it enough times it won't change that it DID happen.

reply

It's just you and your terrible interpretation of the entire conflict, you spanner

too slow chicken marengo, too slow for THIS cat

I can not believe that you just said that "It's proper to kill people in every way possible. That's their job."! That is such bull-hit! Do you know ANYTHING about the Vietnam "Conflict", or, for that matter anything war? The name of the game is NOT to KILL PEOPLE IN EVERY WAY POSSIBLE! Civilian's are supposed to be off limits in any war or "conflict". And whenever possible, the "enemy" is supposed to be taken prisoner. Now, of course these rules are easier said than done when your in a chaotic situation where you can't always tell who the enemy is and your trying to stay alive in a totally foreign land. But, to say kill people in EVERY way possible is not only sadistic, but STUPID! Do you realize how many MORE of your own men would be shot by friendly fire than already are!
Yeah, just kill anything that moves, or makes a sound! Sounds like a plan.

Also, you really believe that we would have settled the Vietnam "Civil War" if it would have been called a war?? You really lost me there. The North and South Vietnamese had been battling for century's before we got there, and they are still split into two sides, only now the North has nuclear weapon's. I don't have the time or the room to go into all the reason's that that WAR was unwinable. A few being; 17 year old boys being dropped into a jungle with no experience in jungle warfare, this includes even the higher more experienced men, the N. Vietnamese had tunnels all over that they knew like the back of their hand, not to mention the fact that there was no way to tell for sure who was the enemy; is it just a kid, or do they have grenades? I suppose your solution would be to kill the kid, just in case. You do know that kind of behaivior would land you in Military Prison.

You sound like you need some help, if you told any Military Psych. about your blood-lust, they would label you section 8 and send you home (if you were lucky), they could send you to in-patient psych ward! And, I will tell you this as a fact, NO ONE knows how they will react in a war until they are REALLY in one!!
The only thing for sure is that you will NEVER be the same person you once were.

What they clearly outline is that the entire chain of command encouraged such activities and never punished people for their crimes.

Every time I hear this "take responsibility" line it makes me roll my eyes. It totally ignores the impact of other people and institutions upon an individual and absolves the person crying 'take personal responsibility' of having to do anything.

reply

Nah, sounds like it's real to me.

It is a crazy thing to get your head around, but, this isn't fake.

My dad was in Marine Recon and did two tours. He used to tell my mom about some of the exact same things the soldiers in this movie did. A few years later, my mom told me what my dad had said when I was old enough. The pushing of prisoners out of helicopters; gunning down prisoners and those surrendering; shooting unarmed civilians and torture. It was almost word for word the same as what was said in the movie.
