What Year Was This Set In?
They never give us a clear answer. I'm guessing mid '70's? Going by the Rolling Stones posters and the old TV sets? I didn't realize until halfway through because the school uniforms were for any decade, really.

shareCharles Manson was well known in the 1980s most of his murders were done in the late 1960s (when he murdered actress Sharon Tate)as for Squeaky Fromme she attempted to assassin President Ford in 1975, and since this movie is taken in the mid 80s, they would have known about those people. But in my opinion this movie doesn't really capture the 1980s as well as other films, it still had a 90s vibe to me, short skirts with stockings, straight hair, maybe that's how preppy kids dressed, but there was know real indication that it was the 1980s besides the heavy cocaine use and cars. They could have at least given someone a perm lol
shareThere was plenty of cocaine around in the 70's, but it just wasn't as popular yet. They also mention acid, which was kind of supplanted by ecstasy in the 80's.
However, this movies seems kind of inspired by the Chamber-Levins "preppie murder", which took place in the mid 80's. So that is more likely.
I knew it wasn't the 70s, if anything I thought it was the 90s, but I don't think kids in the 90s really did coke, it was more weed like how it is now. But there were subtle clues such as cars. Unless your talking about Sarah Michelle Geller's character in Cruel Intentions who did do cocaine in the 90s.
shareI never found out what year either but it truly felt like the 90s in most aspects and that's probably because the movie was made in the late 90s or the year 2000. They didn't dress it up too much like other period movies would.
My guess on when this movie was set in would be the early 80s because as you guys mentioned it felt very 70s and I know the early 80s from like 1980-83 was an extension of the late 70s. The 80s to me didn't truly start until 1984 as 1982 and 1983 were transition years into the 80s and then finally ended in 1992.
