Why do they say that Jade and Smoke are from MK1?

First of all, a confession. I haven't actually played these games yet (aside from one of them once, when I was young) and I regret this. I plan on changing this as soon as I can.

Now the question; when the player earns the right to fight either Jade or Smoke, the message tells them that they are going to fight "an undiscovered fighter from Mortal Kombat 1" or something like that (I have seen it on YouTube), also one of the clues they give is "Mortal Kombat 1".

Why exactly does the game say this? They clearly aren't in MK1 at all, so why does the game say they are? Did they want to have a joke with the player to see if he or she would replay MK1 to see if they could find them in that game too? I know from what I've read that Ed and John aren't afraid to joke with their fans, at least they weren't; Rain started out as a non-existant character so the players would keep trying to find someone who didn't exist, or something.

Sorry if that ended up being long.

Here, you can see that both characters have first appeared in MKII:

So the reference to the first Mortal Kombat was obviously a joke.

I was looking back to see if you were looking back at me to see me looking back at you

Thanks. :)

I think it's meant to imply they were present for the events of the first game, but hidden(even more so than Reptile).
