Question about the police officer

I didn't understand what happened to the police officer who was in the shopkeepers house just before the man in white came back. Did the policeman just ran away in fear that he was going to get caught "with his pants down" although he should have realized that it could be the murderer returning to the scene of the crime? Was he in on it together with the man in white? Or was the officer also murdered (off camera)?

i think he just ran away out of embarrassment and didn't suspected the man in white to be the murderer cause the candy women greeted him very formally.
