What gave this movie the R rating?

Hello.

My wife and I tend to be a bit liberal in what we permit our 11 year old son to watch with us. Before getting an R movie, though, I always like to find out what was it in the film that gave it the R rating so I can decide if we should skip it, or watch it with the FF button handy.

Can someone fill me in on what in this movie gave it the R rating?

Thanks!

I'm not completely sure, but perhaps it was the scene where the youngsters are naked and making love in the garden.

I don't know for sure but I would think it's thematic content rather than that one nude scene that gave this film an R rating.

I think that the american film establishment likes to assign mature ratings to non american or independant films to limit their exposure...or maybe I'm just paranoid.

There were several uses of the "F-word". In American ratings, a movie can use that word *once* and maintain a PG-13. If it is used two or more times, it gets an automatic "R". There were many instances of it in this film. Plus there's the 1-second backside nudity of one man, and a quick shot of two people having sex outside (the most revealing being the man's buttocks).

There was some swearing, and a sex scene, while not graphic, was pretty apparent, with some naked guy bottom and the girl beneath, etc. My guess would be the combination of the two.

and yet in Terminator 3 , the robot rams its arm through the spine of someone from behind , the camera showing it bursting through the chest ... and that gets a "12"

Strange that those reasons mentioned previously weren't even necessary to advance the story line--so why didn't the director edit out the implied sex scene and the four-letter words to make this film more mainstream? Some could give the argument that this film wouldn't appear as believable if a movie about prisoners was totally devoid of all vulgarity. But then again this was a feel-good comedy--so why not edit it all out?

The sex scene was integral to the plot.

There is a scene of two men looking at breast in a magazine.
