I have had this game since I was.....I was....Oh, I can't remember. I have had it for a long time and it is one of the best games I have ever played. Right up there with Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis and the three Monkey Island games (not sure if there is a fourth one). The Lucas Arts point-n-click games are awesome. Is there anyone else out there who has played these games before and enjoyed them as much as I have? I would really like to know how many people have played these kick @#$ games.
Ive never been a huge fan of the Monkey Island games for one reason or another but Day of the Tentacle and Fate of Atlantis are fantastic. Absolute Classics. Im looking forward to playing Sam and Max too as I hear its just as funny as Tentacle. Personally i think Grim Fandango is just as good if not better than these, your thoughts?
As far back as I can remember I always wanted to be a gangster.
Another Lucasarts Adventure game. It came out in about 1998 and has 3D graphics and no point and click system. Its a great story and good graphics in its time, if your a fan of tentacle then you'd like this.
As far back as I can remember I always wanted to be a gangster.
ah yes, grim fandango. great story line. i got it the day it came out 6 years ago. can't believe its been that long, the day we said goodbye to SCUMM and hello to LUA.
I really enjoyed this game too. It's not more than a few minutes ago since I completed this game for the second time. It's been years since I've played it.
The first three Monkey Island games and the two Indiana Jones games were also great. Monkey Island I and Indy: Fate of Atlantis must have been the best of these games, and they are almost as good as Tentacle.
It's sad that these games aren't made anymore, because they were really good education for kids. I'm sure non-English/non-American kids have learnt a lot of English from these games.
There were also other good adventure games, but I think the mentioned six are the only ones I've completed.
I'm Italian and in fact I've learnt English playing the wonderful Lucasfilms games. Day of the Tentacle is my fav one, but I also loved Monkey Island 1 and 2, Loom, Zak McKraken. As for more srious games, the Gabriel Knight series is excellent.
Actually it's not true that these games aren't being made anymore. Of course, they aren't being made by companies but there are fan project games out there, and the best part about them are that they are free.
check out lucasfan games and amberfish arts to see what games are being made and what games are already made.
The original manian mansion is available for download, updated into the newer scumm engine. not sure where to get it from but google should find it for you.
God I used to LOVE playing Day of the tentacle, it was, and still is, my favorite adventure game of all times. It was just hilarious, all the details and jokes made this game truly one of the best ever made. I could sit for hours and hours playing it. This was years ago though and I'd really like to play it again but I'm not sure if it'll work on Windows XP. Anyone have any idea about this?
Another great Lucas game was The Dig. I thought it was pretty hard when I was a kid but I loved the environments that they had on the planet.
But like the original poster said, Day of the tentacle is hands down the best adventure game ever made.
Holy crap, The Dig! I haven't thought about that game in years... I played the Demo and I thought it was just fantastic. I wonder why it never gets mentioned along with the other classics? Did Tim Schafer even work on it, I wonder?
The Dig really is a great game. I dont know why its almost never mentioned and so unfamiliar. Although Tim Schafer didnt work on it, its writing credits include Steven Spielberg (original concept) and Orson Scott Card (dialogue). And also Robert Patrick voices the main character which is pretty funny considering the inside-joke of his character Commander Boston Low asking one of his crew members "Have you seen this boy?"...
this gets the games working on xp without any of the problems (i.e. the sound not working). you have to open the program and then run the games through it, this works for sam and max, day of the tentacle, indy, monkey island 1 and 2 etc
theres also a couple of free games you can get off the site, such as the original maniac mansion and another classic, called Beneath a Steel Sky.
My fav Top-10 game List ever in this order (only one is not Lucasarts and not a real adventure):
Grim Fandango
The Secret of Monkey Island
Monkey Island: LeChuck's Revenge
Maniac Mansion II: The day of the Tentacle
Beyond Good & Evil <--(that is the special one)
Full Throttle
Sam & Max hit the road
Indiana Jones and the fate of Atlantis
The Curse of Monkey Island
Indiana Jones and the last crusade
By the way there was someone saying many would have learned much english out of these games. I actually never played those games in english. I played most of them in Spanish/German as I lived both in Germany and Spain. I wish I had except for Grim Fandango. Generally I hate spanish translations and I watch movies allways in english, but the spanish translation of GF is so awesome I've never heard anything better than this before not even in movies and I can hardly imagine the original to be better. In the spanish version the caracters have different origins and there are spanish accents and argentinian accents and mexican accents. And the action of Grim Fandango taking place in Mexico and Manny being mexican builds up to a more complete experience than the english version could ever be. Unforgetable moment when you crash your ship and are underwater and there is this mexican caracter singing this silly song whit a mexican accent.
Surprisinglly Monkey Island 4: Escape from Monkey Island sucks in the translation. It is incredible bad to a point where you want to smash your PC or just run away. Guybrush has an annoying childs voice and speaks so fast you don't get what he says. This one I was luckylly enough to play in english.
you can find all 14 of the lucas arts classics on any torrent site, i got them on piratebay, talk about a blast from the past, hoagie from day of the tentacle is the funniest character i can remember from any game
1. Simon the Sorcerer 2 2. Simon the Sorcerer 1 3. Day of the Tentacle 4. The Curse of Monkey Island (MI3) 5. Sam & Max hit the road 6. Goblins 3 7. Grim Fandango 8. Monkey Island 2 9. Monkey Island 4 10. Monkey Island 1
So few people mention Full Throttle, another truely majestic game by Tim Schafer. The game had one downside, it was too easy and therefore too short. But besides that, it's certainly one of the best games ever.
These are my favourites, in no particular order:
Monkey Island trilogy (didn't like 4th that much) Day of the Tentacle, Full Throttle, Sam 'n max, Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis, Grim Fandango
Ever heard about the rumour Tim Burton was going to make a movie out of Grim Fandango?
My favorites are; 1. Day of the Tentacle 2. Full Throttle 3. Grim Fandango
For people with android phones, ScummVM is available at marked, and I can confirm that atleast Day of the Tentacle works. Good entertainment when travelling.
Added poster to Day of the Tentacle, should appear withing 72hrs. Lets hope it will boost the rating even higher..
DOTT is a certified classic. I've been playing it since 1994 when I bought the LucasArts Archives Vol. 1 pack. I blazed through it again earlier today, which made me visit the IMDb to see if anybody noticed all the celebrity impressions by the voice actors. Here's what I spotted:
Car thief: Jack Nicholson Nurse Edna: Margaret Hamilton (the Wicked Witch) Weird Ed: Boris Karloff George Washington: Jim Backus (Mr. Howell from Gilligan's Island) Thomas Jefferson: Dudley Do-Right John Hancock/Dwayne: Woody Allen
I'm sure there are others that I didn't recognize, so keep adding to the list! :-)
