This is a bad movie, granted.
But! It's not about religion it's about personal gain and some poor unlucky naive guy learning that you get taken advantage of if you're clever or not.
There seem to be other more clever people who have an agenda you are
not privy to who convince you to do things you wouldn't.

Despite you having a family!

Typical Hollywood! No closure on the family bit, no real ending.
