My favorite line (mild spoiler)

"Why don't you just take over the bank?"

The look that Linney gives and then the look Broderick gives is just priceless. It's a very subtle, very funny display of how Linney's character had grown through the movie.

I love when Samantha is talking to Terry about her son, and she says (I know I'm gonna get this terribly wrong, but it's something like):

"I don't want him to know those things now!!!!! He'll have plenty of time to grow up and go out into the world and realize it's a horrible place and that everybody sucks all by himself!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! He doesn't need any help right now."

It's so true.

(And I know I mangled that quote)

There were many humorous moments in the film but one that immediately comes to mind is one of the exchanges between Brian and Sammy at the bank, the part where he is getting more and more fussy and says "Obviously you're not happy here. You keep leaving, and fighting with me."
Sammy counters with "You have got to be the worst manager we've ever had. The worst."
Then he says, "I think this is just an issue we need to explore!" and her hilarious response, "YOU explore it! I'm going back to work."

reply

LOL! Yes, all the scenes between her and her boss are funny. I love all those quotes plus when she says

"Brian, get OFF my ass."
"Excuse me?"
"I didn't change the color(whatever she says!) on your screen."
"Well then that's all you had to SAY!"

"Would you classify that as a launch problem or a design problem?"

I think the funniest scenes occur between Terry and Rudy. I especially love the one when Terry comes into Rudy's bedroom late at night and he talks to Rudy like hes an adult. Mark Ruffalo completely embodies how I think the director wanted Terry to come off- my favorite lines: "I know, theres just NOTHING to do here" and "I'm just reading some of your... compositions" Actually just the entire scene was amazing.

The other one is when Sam catches Terry and Rudy in the stairwell and Terry blames them being up late on Rudy. I think it went something like this: "We were out stargazing and Rudy here lost track of time... which I totally warned him about! You are a bad kid!"

Mark Ruffalo's performance in the whole movie was amazing- how he flawlessly transitioned from the charming and funny Terry, to the deeply troubled and vulnerable little brother. It was totally in keeping with all his performances and probably his best (although We Don't Live Here Anymore's Jack was awesome too!) Rory Culkin and Laura Linney also really impressed me!

My favorite line was from Terry in the bar with Rudy:

"I got a hundred bucks here that says me and my nephew can beat anybody in here, only we gotta get the next game because he's got to be in bed by ten o'clock."

Yep - a fantastic movie that I bet not a lot of people have seen, and I wish they would. Ruffalo and Linney are as good as it gets in this. And you're right - the way Terry speaks to Rudy as an equal and treats him like an equal is so great.

Although I suggested another favourite line in an earlier post I have to agree entirely with the mention of the scenes between Terry and Rudy, especially the scene mentioned by TOWchanschic. Terry arriving in the bedroom and beginning a tirade, going on and on and on about how boring life was in the place, nothing to do and Rudy should make his mind up to get away as soon as he could and on and on and on about this and the many other difficulties of life.
It was worth paying the money just to see the look of sheer confusion on Rudy's face as he asked "WHAT are you talking about?" And Terry's response, almost for the first time realising that he was talking to an eight-year-old "I have NO idea!"

omg algebroad..I totally loved that scene too! Especially after he lets Rory Culkin's character do it himself and ends up hammering it like Terry as Terry watches. But the significance was,as you said, that Terry respects other people and is an open-minded person.

"What's it about?"
"My father. It's not very good"
"Don't say that."

my favorite part was when they're in the bait shop and Ruffalo proudly puts the gear on the counter and just says "we're going fishing" and the camera holds for a second. hilarious.

As well as all those listed there were two other moments in the film that I though were really funny. The first was an exchange between between Sammy and Brian.
Sammy: I could use a beer
Brian: I could use a tranquiliser

The next one was when Terry took Rudy on the eagerly awaited fishing trip and the first we see of them "enjoying" themselves is Rudy's comment:

Rudy: I have never been so bored in my entire life!

More things are wrought by prayer than this world dreams of.

So.. what example are you gonna set for us tonight, Sammy?

reply

When Sammy called Bob and said: "What are you wearing?" And Bob got confused: "Mom?"

Constantly talking isn't necessarily communicating

reply

Wow!, I can't believe nobody has mentioned what i thought were some of the funniest lines in the movie.

Sammy: (Answering Phone) "Hey Brian, what are you doing"

Brian: Oh, I just drove up to the store to get some milk, and thought i'd call and say hi; can you meet me up at the motel in half an hour?"

Sammy: "Brian, I think you're going crazy!"

Brian: (sighs) "I know I am, can you meet me in half an hour?"

or

When Brian and Sammy are in the car and starting to make out for the first time and Brian says..

Brian: "Sammy, I really need to know who changed the colors on my monitor"

then there is that brief moment of silence, and then they both start cracking up.

*beep* Brilliant!

reply

Sammy: "I *beep* my boss"
Terry: "What?"
Sammy: "And his wife is six months pregnant"
Terry: "Jesus Christ!"

I love the porch scene because no matter what, Sammy isn't afraid to confide in Terry.

It's hard to say what my favorite parts/lines are, because it's all so wonderful. I'm trying to get everyone I know to watch this movie, because it's so under the radar but incredible.

reply

This was my favourite too. It is made all the better by the scene just before it, about smoking pot, mentioned in the post below.

reply

Terry: "You want to smoke some pot?"

Sammy: "NO, I do NOT want to smoke some POT ... why, do you have any?"

That was it!! that was the greatest scene!! i hate to admit it but it reminds me of my relationship with my brother. That is why I loved this movie so much!! I swear we have been in that situation!! It was just funny the way she reacted like: "NO WAY... i would NEVER do such a thing" then within secods..."why? do you have any?" And then the scene that followed when they are smoking and she says she "bleeped" her boss. It was just so real!

reply

Isn't it the best?

I think the reason that I really love this movie, what makes it so real, is that the tragedy of their youth (the car accident that killed their parents) is never spoken about, but it's infused in every scene -- in this one, it's so obvious that Sammy *still* feels like she needs to be the responsible caretaker and a good role model -- and when she lets her guard down and realizes a) they're both adults now and b) she's not nearly as together as she lets on, it's so achingly real and therefore screamingly funny.

almost all of mine have already been mentioned:
-on the porch when sammy admitted to terry abt her & the boss
-in rudy's room, terry talking to rudy like he was an adult & rudy had NO idea wtf he was even talking abt
-when terry asked sammy if she wanted to smoke pot
-when sammy called bob & asked what he was wearing
-when terry asked sammy what example she was gonna set for them that nite

but no one's said this one:
after terry reneged on taking rudy fishing, terry & sammy were arguing abt it in the hall; & she suddenly got fed up with him & just belted him with the linens she was holding & said "you SUCK!" & stalked off.

I love all the scenes mentioned especially the porch scene and the scene when Terry comes into Rudy's room... one line in that scene that hasn't been mentioned that cracks me up everytime I see it...
Terry: You know this used to be my room?
Rudy: (nods) You want it back?
Flawless!

In the restaurant, Terry is embarrassed that he didn't dress up to meet Sammy and he refers to his old tee shirt as the "haute cuisine" of garments.
